Just curious, what does one need to study to be in this field? These are the guys that work with the base stations etc

yup, i know.. i am trying to decide which is better.. masters in telecoms or b/mtech in radio engineering.

do you want to physically work with base stations, like installing and maintaining them? or do you want to plan when they should go how high antennas should be, which direction they should point etc?

masters in telecoms would be better IMO, but its not necesary to do any of the above mentioned jobs.

Ideally? a bit or both but i'm not a office person. I just trying to figure out what to study as i can't take another yr of sitting on my 4$$.

Technically a masters doesn't give you any real advantage if you have done telecoms in undergrad other than allowing you to pick up things you missed(well depends where you do it, but from what i've seen.. you still have to learn more technical things inline with the equipment used which u get training for).
The reason I am enticed by the B/Mtech course is simply that the practical stuff is all in there and to me being able to do stuff seems a lot more useful than having a masters and basically knowing theory but being able to do little.

Telecoms companies have different departments that work together. Each department is responsible for a certain aspect of the network. Eg One department does the installations, another does maintenance, another plans and optimisises the network. They usually provide training for a job, and I'm not sure if a masters would help out much.

You could also look into working with vendors, for example ericsson, nokia siemens, motorolla, huawei, alcatel etc. They supply the operators with the equipment and support for the equipment, which would maybe allow you to work in all aspects of network, and maybe that is where a masters or mtech would be more suitable. Not sure tho.

I know ericsson has a student/ learnership program, I went to a presentation last year, best to look at the websites of the various companies to get an idea for where you want to work and what the requirements for the job you want are.
