Agency that gets R2.18 from every litre of petrol defends R48,000 hat payment

Two Road Accident Fund (RAF) officials defended two media contracts, each worth an estimated half a million rand, before the Standing Committee on Public Accounts on Wednesday, 15 October 2025.

Spokesperson McIntosh Polela and communication specialist Hlami Nicolette Mathye appeared in Parliament, arguing that the contracts provided value and were effective in marketing to accident victims.

MPs discussed various issues surrounding the contracts, flagging dodgy invoices. Among the invoices was one amounting to R48,300 for a single bucket hat from Dzinge Productions.

However, Polela explained that, while the invoice only showed a quantity of one hat, it was for more than one unit.
 
The contracts were provided to Media Mix 360 in 2022, with an expiration date in 2027, and to Dzinge Productions in 2024, with an expiration date in 2028.

What marketing obligations does the RAF have?
 
These were obviously not normal hats. They were pedestrian and passenger helmets. If you reduce head injuries, you reduce RAF payouts. Come on people, you should all know this😁
 
R280k for mops and R48k for hats. Really the question that should be asked is why does the RAF have a mandate to market? I'm sure everyone involved in an accident would rather want a timely payout instead of hearing what the RAF does for you.
 
The term slush fund comes to mind with these clowns,
What's more interesting is why now, and what is still finding in innocuous invoices that hasn't been exposed yet.

Same thing came to me as well. Why is there a mandate to market. They already get marketed by ambulance chasing lawyers.

100%.

There is no reason for them to be marketed.

If you told me they spent money to trace accident victims that would make some sense at least.
 
They actually took the medical aids to court so that they dont have to pay your hospital bills if youre on medical aid.
 
How about only paying claims to people that have contributed to the fuel levy.

BEE Entitlement at its best.

Marketing is not required.

It's just their incompetence.

How about the whole government fire themselves for incompetence and malice? That would be ideal.
