RAID 0

Hi guys

I set up a RAID 0 Stripe in my bios today with a 320GB SATA and a 160GB SATA. However, the RAID's size is only 298GB. Why is this? Is it because the volumes are not identical? I'm using Windows 7 so I'm guessing I didn't need to install any additional drivers like with XP.

Any RAID setup will always use the smallest size drive capacity as a denominator. Which in your case only used 160gb of the 320gb because the smallest capacity in that array is 160gb.

It's best to use identical drives unless you're willing to waste the extra capacity.

Not for RAID 0? I'm under the impression RAID 0 simply adds up all the physical disks and their spaces and creates a single virtual drive.

No. RAID0 interleaves (stripes) the data across each drive. You are wanting something that is normally called JBOD.
