Rain 5G officially launched

Rain has officially launched its 5G service to the public, offering unlimited data at speeds of up to 700Mbps at R1,000 per month.

Rain first launched its 5G products in September, but this was only open to a “select group of existing customers”.
 
The router was R1k at first, then R2k something, and now R3450.

That is quite a steep leap in inflation in a very short while.

By cheaper and better upload speed you are referring to what speeds and what price if I may ask.

Not on Openserve unless you go 100Mbps+ which is more than R1000 per month and very slower download speeds with upload speeds only marginally faster.
 
I am just barely in the coverage zone. Will I need direct line of site to the tower to achieve that 80mpbs?

I am in their 5G area. Which is also the 4G area. But I will not switch. I don't trust them. It is this very "area" that had me sign up for 4G LTE (fixed) when that started (via Afrihost it was). Great for a few months (40 Mbps regularly). Then it dropped to about 2 Mbps or under constantly. No assistance from Rain or Afrihost. Just apologies from Afrihost. And dial up type speed.
Left them.
A bit later they launched the new uncapped at times thing. Still wonder if there were dots to connect.
Now: It is this very same 4G infrastructure in my area that now is shazzam magic 5G?
I was burned before.

Depends on your use case. I spent some time in South Korea with uncapped 5G and for a lot of people fibre is just not worth it anymore. ~500Mbps at any point of the day in your pocket, it is more than good enough for streaming and whatever else you want to do.

Well depends but you do not need LOS.

IF it's bad and you can have an external unit installed they will install an external unit. If that fails they give your money back and you look for another solution.

From all the tests I've done even if you are really far from the tower 200Mbps still very achievable it's just the upload speed that will suffer unfortunately.

Sounds awesome. How is gaming on 5G? Is there an unrestricted nat type?

What happens if you're not covered for 5G?

From their website, I can't see an unlimited 4G service, just unlimited off peak and pay as you go.

Seems odd not to have unlimited 4G.

Yeah, there was talk off new 4G packages being offered with the launch of 5G.
