RAIN and Port forwarding (NAT)

So the rain mobile doesnt have public ip's its sold as a mobile product not fixed

You will find the same thing with MTN, Vodacom, Telkom etc, by default you get allocated a private ip so people sending random data to your public ip wont eat your airtime/data

I would imagine RAIN also does not want someone paying R250pm to stream their security cameras all day and consuming all the upload on the network.

Totally agree with what you are saying however not all residential complexes are willing to agree to install fibre.
I got the Rain uncapped product for the lockdown period so i can at least earn some income. I was trying to get the Xbox up and running for my son but i am getting a Double NAT Detected. After doing some research it turns out that Rains public IP addresses are Dynamic and not Static.

Get your own server set it up as a VPN then on your router get it to connect to that server on L2TP or PPTP think that’s what my Q2 supports I tested it today and it works

I have cool ideas fibre at my one place setup a VPn there and on my 5G Q2 I L2TP to it and then set the rules on the server if you wanna port forward etc, haven’t done the port forward but it will work


I use a UniFi Dream Machine on my fibre side to manage it all

Not really in SA that would be cheap and is gonna let you install a VPN server on it..As they usually Shell Lock you. OVH in Paris is cheap $3.50 per a month for 100mbps

It will cost you a fair bit i think

If you have something at home that can establish the connection you can use Windscribe for this.

They offer static IP’s for I think $2 a month or free ephemeral ones.

Much cheaper and easy to manage than setting up your own VPS or other self managed cloud solution.

anyone get this working - setting up a VPS with a VPN in SA? no realistic options out there that is not pricy and wont add to much latency?
 
Double Nat happens if rain route and external router wants to issue ip addresses for WiFi and addresses. Best way is to switch of WiFi on rainrouter. Look on YouTube loads of videos about double NAT

@Coza, Are you still able to get this working on the latest version of ZeroTier? Mine stopped working on v1.6.2 and i have not been able to get it to work again.

Not sure if ZT or rain broke...
 
@jbroo , I have not had a days issues with ZT and Rain. I have double checked and I have 4 devices running 1.6.2 and are currently connected, and a few 1.4.6, also connected.

Have you got your devices to auto join or do you have to auth them manually.
are they getting IP's from ZT ?

Bizarre that you are struggling, it just works....usually.
