Rain Antenna

Spoke to the guy at Otto, and going to try this model: http://www.otto.co.za/products/antennas/gsm-3g-4g-lte/omnidirectional-mimo-antenna-7db-gain/

If it doesn't work too well, I'll consider getting the Poynting one and returning this one. Good thing about this model is it doesn't have to be mounted externally, and guy said it should have at least 3 times the gain my internal B618 huawei antenna can manage

I'm not keen on omnidirectional antennas. You get much better gain and less noise with a dipole or Yagi

Just bearing in mind that antenna gain (dBi) is a logarithmic unit - adding 3 dBi means that it's double the gain. So just to calibrate your expectations.

Based on the datasheet, that one should give you some improvement, it's worth a try. You will still need SMA-TS9 adapters though.

I spoke to the guy at Otto, and he said for this one I won't need adapters. I looked at the picture of the wire, and it looks like it will fit into the antenna ports on the router. I might be wrong though

The omnidirectional is much cheaper, so I think I'll try it first, before plumping for something extra and returning it. My landlord isn't too keen on me having to drill holes and mount something outside.

Cheaper != Better ;)

The datasheet says that it has N-type ports on the cables which are even bigger and uglier than SMA ports. I haven't seen any N-type to TS9-type adapters available. But I may have misread the datasheet, perhaps the guy is right.

If he's willing to let you return it if it doesn't work, then I guess you're not risking anything.

Okay antenna hasn't improved signal at all. Speeds the same as before. Will have to look into getting something that has to be mounted outside

Just to confirm m.zakariyya.g that you set the antenna setting to external on the router webpage?

You could try hard resetting [take a screenshot of usage as all this goes away] and set the toggle to external and try again :).

Before connecting the antenna again, make a note of signal stats using LTEwatch-h . You will need this to finetune your signal for optimal results ;) .

Have fun because it will take abit of time to find the best sweet spot :).

I will try to reset. Did set the antenna setting to external on router webpage. Moved the Antenna all over the house and nothing

Okay, so I got a Poynting Xpol-006 - Signal has improved slightly from 2-3 bars out of 5, and speeds are now better but inconsistent. Downloads are erratic from 12mbps to 24mbps and consistantly changing. Better than nothing until I can get someone to come and install it properly on a pole and higher up.

The XPOL-006 should work pretty well. It's got a good amount of gain, but again - it does need to be pointed properly, otherwise there's a risk of making things worse.

Hope you come right soon.

Tried every direction and 2/3 bars is the best I can get. Think It needs a bit of elevation and a pole.

I think it differs for everyone (if your in a dense area.. the whole are gets 2/3 bars.. moving it a meter or 5 to left / right might make minor differences)

If you want 4bars or 5 you need elevation. (or a better angle / line of site)

I doubt that I'm in a dense area, and when I've plugged the sim into my phone and went out front I've gotten speeds up to 40mbps

It's wireless, it depends entirely on how far from the tower you are and what's in the way.

An XPOL-006 is designed to work outside, so you need to put it outside, waving it around your lounge isn't going to accomplish much. It's also highly directional so you need to contact RAIN and find out which direction the tower is in, mount the antenna facing the appropriate direction and then systematically rotate it until you find the best signal.

If the direction of the tower puts a massive building in the way, well then you need elevation.

Luckily for me I can see my tower so setting my Pointing up was fairly easy :)

What do these towers look like ?
