Rain has been billing me for owning their sim card, I have an outstanding balance of R2000.00 on my Rain. The last time I paid for the service was in October before I left the country I come backntoday and they say I own them. Isn't Rain supposed to be a month to month service. I paid for the service when I needed it but that seems to have changed.

They want to bill you for just owning their sim card without getting any internet from them

Please help me understand anyone

I don't have rain, so not sure how they work and their terms of service, but it sounds like you entered into a monthly agreement and it may require a month notice to cancel, both parties need to be given notice to cancel (sounds like only one side knows about this cancellation), I always like to see things from both sides. For example if it was the other way around:

Would you be happy if you still needed internet and they just cancelled your service without notice? I don't think so :p

Just cancel the service the proper way as per their terms of service.

They used to have a pay as you use model where you could buy data like prepaid. But they dropped that in 2021 somewhere. Not sure how OP ended up on a contract though.

Gozzy is quite right. You haven't cancelled your month-to-month agreement with them, but simply failed to pay. That becomes an Accounts Receivable problem. You have yet to properly notify them of your intention to terminate the service. As far as they know you still require the service even though you're not actually using it, perhaps because you're away. They're delivering what they agreed to provide, an internet service as per your agreement. It's up to you to perform your side of the contract, which is pay as invoiced. Until you probably terminate, as agreed.

By the way, they're not billing you for owning their SIM card. They're billing you for the service you agreed to buy from them. Whether you actually use the service is another matter entirely - there could be many valid reasons why you don't actually use data, but that's not a breach of the contract. Failing to use the data you contract to buy from them M2M is not a breach. Neither is it compulsory. All you need do is pay the monthly fee until you properly terminate.

Look at it this way

If you hire a hooker for an evening at an hourly rate, and then go outside and smoke for 3 hours, you still owe her for the three hours she sat and did nothing.

This was one of the most clickbaity things I have ever clicked on.

Month to month, which means you can cancel any time, you did not cancel, and now you learned what month to month means.

Check your contract
That would be the first thing to do I would have thought?

I understand it as OP thinks if you don't pay for the month the sim "stops working" and billing stops and that's that. Funny.

But there was no contract

As long as the service is not cancelled, whether you use it or not, you are still billed as normal until you cancel.
