Rainbird Smart Controller - LAN only ?

After many emails describing the problem, arguing about wi-fi signal strength, and getting the support of their business partner in SA, Rainbird have finally fixed the problem. As from this morning, I can operate the controller using Vodacom without any problems from three Vodacom phones and two Vodacom 3g modems.
From the Rainbird support guy "Thank you for the follow up. We are glad it is finally working on Vodacom."
I hope I don't have to swallow my words tomorrow!

How?

It even stopped working on Telkom since this (https://mybroadband.co.za/news/cell...n-vodacom-best-data-deal-in-south-africa.html) . I know the post is about roaming, but it coincided perfectly.

But since your post, I've tried again (Telkom) and it worked.

I bought one of these last week (https://www.rainbird.eu/products/controllers/esp-rzxe-series-controller) and I'm having an issue on setup. Rainbird has confirmed that the 'smart' part of the irrigation is new to them, so there are likely to be bugs on their side - fair enough. I'm trying to understand whether this situation is them or me :

On my LAN, the system works perfectly - I can login into the controller and it breaks out into the Internet to get a weather forecast. But issues start when it's off the LAN (ie When I'm sitting at work) and I try access the controller. It seems to access onceonly - but there is no Internet breakout.

The second time I try, it won't even access the controller at all and spit out a Network Error. When I go home and get back on the LAN, it accesses the controller but still no Internet break out ... if I reset everything, I can access the controller and break out to the Internet once again from the LAN. That is, until I attempt to access off my network ...

The gateway and everything is correct and I see it assigns itself a static IP.

Someone mentioned DynDNS may help?
They mentioned the lack of no cloud, ie I log back directly - which could be an issue?

I have smart lights and cameras, and I have no issue accessing them anywhere - but both are hosted with AWS.

This whole Rain Bird system is from another time - one which did not have the internet or smart homes or anything that you might want from an internet-connected, smart home sprinkler system. I only changed to it because my old OpenSprinkler died and is no longer being imported. That was little more than an Arduino in a case but it was great.

This device is insanely expensive, the app has borderline criminal UX and it has endless stupid limitations. I would describe myself as severely unhappy with this and would STRONGLY advise you buy something else.

when mine died I bought this:

added a raspberry pi and I was back in business, I refuse to use anything else. This has 16 zones and is much faster to navigate
