Raleigh 29 inch from Games

i bought a Raleigh bike off Game in 2000 for about R800 back then
what a load of rubbish

hopefully it is better nowadays

but if its for pub crawling and going to the cafe for the odd loaf of bread it is fine.
However if you wanna buy this for next months Argus you better start eating lots of Jungle Oats, this puppy is gonna make you moeg quickly
 
@Vondutch, whereabouts in the country are you? Why I ask, perhaps your local cycle shop might be able to give you good advice and price.

There is a cycle shop in Linden, Johannesburg (as an example), where we have had great service. Our recent purchase from them came with two free services (T&Cs apply), which was a nice touch. Just a thought.
 
I'd rather get 2nd hand, but you'd need to know your stuff.

The fact you're considering that bike implies you don't :)

Your LBS would be a better starting point.

What's the intended use?
 
I returned a similar bike 2 days later, the thing was a damn death trap, very unstable and cheap materials. Dont let the flashy design and graphics fool you.

Who the hell goes pub crawling on a bicycle?
 
Depends what you want to do on the mountain. Gravel paths... sure this will do the job. You will have to work a bit as I would think the frame is not very light weight but it will handle gravel just fine.

If you wanting to do any rocky paths / downhill, probably at any speed faster than walking you are going to completely wreck those shocks and wreck them quickly. Likely a no name brand with very minimal travel so if you do wreck them, likely no spares or spares will likely cost as much as the bike.

Then there is the grip shifters and, chances are, very cheap ones. These will do fine under light use but I suspect under heavy use you may experience problems. Personally I would rather go for cheap trigger shifters than grip.

The 21 speed means there will be 3 gears in the front. This is a personal preference but I will never recommend a 3x to anyone. Personal experience riding with the GF is she got constantly confused as to what gear she was in and which gear to operate ( front or back ). Her new bike I got is a 2x and she is much more comfortable with it.

With a 2x if the climbing gets hard, drop the front gear and if more is needed now you only have to worry about the back... visa versa if you going downhill and end up spinning.

TL;DR - Save up for a decent entry bike ( Trek Excalibre 7 ) or second hand mid entry bike.
 
fine for riding round the block with your kids or at a caravan park or something, absolute no go for off road use
 
Rather buy something used off the bikehub.co.za classified - and go for a test ride even if it is around a parking lot. You are bound to get a way better deal.

I sold this to a lovely 1st year student, same build as my wife, and she remarked that it felt way more stable than a flimsy super marker bike.

Those mass mart type stores sells some of the worst bikes available.
 
Don't buy that pigiron crap, as Roux said look for a good second hand make.

One day I picked up one of the so-called Raleigh "Aluminium" frames and it felt like it was filled with lead.

A good brand to look at it Giant or Merida Matts range
 
Your local bike shop will also have affordable entry level bikes, some of them locally made like Avalanche, Titan and Momsen.
