So I have noticed after dooing windows updates, and installing all drivers and office that my 256gb vertex 4 ssd is down to 198gb. Don't know why it is so low considering hardly anything has been loaded, so it got me thinking.....wouldn't it be better to write my cache files directly to RAM (have 16gb....most of it free). Any advantages, disadvantages etc?

Also another question....where would I be able to disable the writing of cache to the ssd if I'm writing it to the RAM? I presume under the system settings where it shows you was the desinated cache size is?

Seeing as your started with 238GB formatted capacity 198GB is not so bad. Is it a Laptop? What about data corruption during power failures?

BTW I think your are stressing too much about space on the SSD. You have more than enough.

It's perfectly safe to move you temporary folders (%temp%, Temporary Internet Files folder, etc) to a RAM drive. I've done just that on my office & home PC's.
Just take note that if your PC is not on an UPS and you get a power failure, that you'll lose all your unsaved work!

That sounds about right. If it is Win 7, then it leaves copies of redundant files (well different versions of the same files) in the winsxs folder which means that it will grow over time and as you add more programs.

When you install SP1, it also leaves a backup of the previous files, which you can delete to free up some space if you want, at the cost of not being able to uninstall SP1, which really doesn't seem like an issue. I did this ages ago and have had no problems since.

the ssd is in a pc, used mainly for gaming. yes my pc is on a ups with a backup time of about 20min. what sort of programs could i use, and as i said before...how would i manage to stop the system caching on the drive itself, maybe under the system priorities, advanced, performance options, change?
