Ram for Macbook Pro

+1

RAM will be limited by the chip set, or by the lowest MHz stick in the system.

If you add DDR3-1600 RAM to a chip set that supports up to DDR3-1600, but has an existing DDR3-1066/1333, the DDR3-1600 addition will be down-clocked to DDR3-1066/1333.

Guys, separate question, is it easy upgrading the RAM on a iMac? I'd imagine it has a cover on the back that unscrews to reveal the relevant slots, similar to a laptop?

Underneath the iMac is 2 screws - remove them and the covering slot and you have access to the ram chips.

What about an iMac which ram does it use

Go to www.macsales.com, select your machine and they will tell you which of their tested modules work. I've used them a few times b4, and know about 5 people that have also used them and their ram is functioning without a problem. They do post to SA and they also sell a really cool screw driver kit for Macbooks and iMacs with the torq screw driver etc that you require for hdd changes on a macbook.

I only punt this website as I received excellent service from them the one time my RAM never made it to SA. New modules were sent free of charge, via the quickest (way more expensive) shipping option! All i had to do was send an email to their customer center and I got a mail. Even got a follow up a few days later asking how the install went and if the machine was running well! Great service, we need companies like that in SA :)

Why not just buy generic ram locally or are you one of those that believes ram is specifically designed for an apple?

Generic ram is fine, but i have read a few posts (be it 2 years ago) where certain companies memory doesn't come out of sleep properly all the time. That for me is what swung me to look for a company that sells generic ram that is tested.

Never come across that myself.

Then I suggest you go buy genuine apple ram (relabeled generic ram) from dealer and pay whatever they charge.

or just buy tested generic ram for a little extra than normal generic ram? read the whole thread man.

I just buy generic cheap RAM with lifetime warranty. If it gives issues I'll take it back.

Yeah, I'll be paying R852 for the exact same modules ... and as a bonus I would not have to deal with WantItAll's absolute pathetic service again (ever) :D

EDIT: Oh no, wait, mine will be 1333 modules instead of 1066!

1066 is normally DDR2. >1333 is DDR3. Just checking.
