RAM for Macbook

Ok, so i have the first macbook aluminium, 13.3" (i think its late 2008). Has 2 gigs ram, wanna upgrade it. So i go to istore in melrose arch and find out how much a 4 gig chip costs. they quoted me 8727 rand for 1 4 gig chip (ahhh the mac experience)... and 1700 for 1 2 gig chip

Wanna know what is the max ram this mac book can take, and also what third party ram is supported? Anyone upgrade theirs?

Also does the macbook (late 2008 have 2 x 1 gig modules, or 1 by 2 gig? )

I got 2gig ram from Take 2 for R340 for my macbook 13" - it uses normal laptop sodimms - just make sure you get the correct speed etc.

Hulle rook jou. You can get the "for Mac" 4GB memory from Corsair direct for $80 - linky. I always use them (easier here though).

If you have 2gig of RAM its almost definitely 2x1gig - Check in your System Profiler - Apple>About this Mac>More Info>Memory

Looks like that's the right set. I have 16gig of OWC RAM in my MacPro, saved a tonne of cash, 2 years running, no problems.

You can verify your Macbook model by entering your Mac serial number here, it will tell you the exact date it was made, etc.

cool, gonna order that chip i posted (crucial don't seem to ship that corsair to SA...might have prefered that brand). Found a video where the dude installs the same stuff on youtube, so i rate it will work Also comes to like 800 with shipping, and will install my self... doesn't look tooo hard. I see the 2.4 2008 is on there list of supported mac books as well and thats the one i have, speeds seem right too. Thanks guys.

Just as a side note, i searched the forum for ram as i was quite sure there would be a thread addressing this issue, but nothing came up. Pretty weird.

Easier and cheaper solution: Dump the Mac and buy PC - R120 per Gb DDR2 and as little as R200 per Gb for DDR3...

OWC = R160 per gig DDR3

You're right though, PC's are 'cheap'

Your augument falls flat - the Macbook uses the same memory as Windows Notebooks - SoDimms. Don't know why people insist on getting Apple certified memory modules - ITS THE SAME THING.

Ok so typical post office, they lost the parcel and i never got my ram, until MacSales posted me a new one at no cost, and used fed ex. Got it today, installed it and now have 4 gigs. Was damn easy to change the ram, i was shocked. I watched a video online and the dude struggled a little with taking out and inserting the 2nd chip. But i experienced no such trouble, they even shipped the ram with a set of instructions of how to change the ram.

Yea, seems to be working really well hey... just wondering if should hold onto my old ram incase i need apple to hold up my warranty, i might need to load the original ram back in....

RAM is user serviceable - changing it doesn't affect your warranty.

it's possible but more pricey -
2x 2gig Ram= $88
1x 4gig= $257
Invariably there is no point hanging on to the old RAM unless maybe when you have more than 2 RAM slots

I bought my RAM from AXIZ, R722 inclu VAT for 4GB.

My mac is flying now like a dream.

Can't. Machine has 2 ram slots. So i bought 2 x 2 gigs. Also, apple advise not to use more than 4 gigs on this model. Decreases stability

I have 2 gigs of "Apple-certified RAM" for sale. (2 x 1 gig chips). Its DDR3 SO-Dimms 1066. Anyone interested? What does DDR 3 1066 go for ?
