Helloo! Me AGAIN!

After haivng asked this question to 5 different ppl & getting 5 different sets of answers, I've decided to ask you guys. :wtf:

I'm building an i7 Desktop. At the moment I have Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz LGA1366 Processor with a Asus Rampage II Extreme IX58 Motherboard.

My question to you guys is, can I use ANY DDR3 RAM, ie. 1333, 1600 & 2000? Am I limited to just using 1333 Modules?

Thanks!

You can use any, but it will only run at the rated speed of the RAM or at DDR3 1800 if you have faster RAM.

Aah ok. Not sure if I get it...

Basically wouldnt it make sense to just go with DDR3 - 2000, because it would be the fastest RAM to get?

Yep, you can use higher frequency RAM other than 1333, however you might have to increase the IMC voltage in order to run the RAM at it's rated speed because i7 natively supports up to 1333 not 1600 or 1866 or whatever else.

If you don't benchmark or overclock, it makes no sense buying high frequency memory as the performance gain would be minimal (you won't notice the difference). Though, you're buying quite an extreme mobo so it would be a sin not to OC/Run some benchmarks. In that case go for the 2000MHz memory (timings also matter, not just the memory frequency too).

Make sure that the modules you get run at 1.65v or less too.

IMO I'd rather get few a few extra gigs of RAM instead of upping the speed. I think the ratio of performance gain from more RAM as opposed to faster RAM is far greater.
But if money isn't really an issue, you may as well get the fastest available.

Thanks for the info guys. I finally get it.

I think I'm going to stick to the OCZ 1333's I orderd.
