Hey guys.

I have a family member running a ECS P4M800PRO-M Board with 256 megs of RAM. They want to purchase additional RAM but I checked on the website and the maximum supported is DDR2 -533 MHZ. I checked the Esquire price list and they are selling 1 gb DDR2 - 800 for R199 ex vat.

My question is, if I purchase DDR2 - 800, will it work on this board? I'm assuming the speed will be automatically dropped to 533?

Also check what the maximum amount of ram is that the board can take - some older boards only take 2GB max (2x 1GB modules)

Yeah I am worried about that. The board only has 2 slots. I tried looking on different sites for specs but they don't tell me what the maximum supported size is. I think I'll tell them to get 2 x 1GB modules and dump the 256 meg module.

Sybaritic still supplies DDR2 533 if you're worried about stability issues. Looks like the board supports max 1gb per slot (it states 2gb max with 2 slots, so I'm assuming).

Hmmm..

Yeah they have the SuperTalent 1gb for R308.. Quite pricey considering I would have to pay for shipping as well. I think I'd just get 2 x 1 gb modules from Esquire. Will be cheaper. As for stability.. Well, from what I've read the speed will just be downclocked. Thanks guys for your help !

Let me google that for you,

MEMORY
Single-channel DDR memory architecture
2 x 184-pin DDR DIMM socket support up to 2 GB
2 x 240-pin DDR2 DIMM socket support up to 2 GB
Support DDR400/333 DDR SDRAM or DDR2 533/400 DDR2 SDRAM

Dont worry about the ram speed. The mobo will run it at 533 anyway. The problem comes in when the mobo try to run the ram at a faster speed that the ram can handle.
