RAM Question..

It's preferred that you buy a tripple channel kit.
But you can buy a 2GB now then a 2GB later and another 2GB even later on..
It'll work just fine :)

Also take note of the colour of the ram slots that your placing your sticks in. The manual will specify which channel form part of each channel.. And you should stick to that to ensure it uses the ram effectively.

I've never noticed any difference in real world performance between using ram in single or dual or tripple channel :/

Now a slight de-rail//

I can get a Asus p6t Deulxe Mobo and 2.66ghz quad core 1366 CPU.Is it better than my 955BE and ecs 790gx that I had?

I'd have to ask why do you want to upgrade?

The 1366 would be better, but if this is for gaming you won't find any really increase in fps between the two.

Thats a comparison on a variety of applications and games..

If you want to upgrade i'd rather try for the 1155 platform.

That said you'd get alot better fps increase if you upgraded your GPU.

Was thinking in the line of 2 x 6850's with the mentioned system.

just check at which speed your motherboard rates it's PCI lanes for the graphics cards assuming it supports crossfire.

Ideally you'd want x16/x16 then x16/x8 then x8/x8 and lastly anything less is not worth it :)
The 1366 platform supports x16/x16 is which is why alot of people go that platform for multi gpu setups..

But the 1155 which uses x8/x8 on some boards performs extremely well and should be considered.

Ya then i wouldn't upgrade your platform just yet.. rather just buy a 580 :D

Sorry but I didn't mention to you that I had the 955BE and ECS 790gx setup. The system got hit by lightning in beginning of 2011 and I have nothing atm.Thought the CPU,Mobo and GPU's would be better than my previous setup.

ahhhh!!! hahahaha now this makes sense : Thank you Lightning!!!!:(

Ya look if you buying new, then i'd push you to 1155 but if you getting second hand and you're getting a good deal then the 1366 is perfect.

Which CPU are you getting 920, 930(refresh of the 920) or 950?
The 930 is a bit better for OC'ing compared to the 950.

There are a few 'Stepping' variations on the i7 920. I think the 'D0' (D-Zero) one can usually be overclocked to 4.2GHz if you have a decent motherboard, like the Asus P6T Deluxe. To reach 4.2GHz, your motherboard will have to reach 200MHz FSB (and 21x multiplier, which is the max on the i7 920) if I'm not mistaken.

Like I've got an i7 940 (ES), which can't even reach 4GHz :(

kelevra:
1.5V - 1.65V works on the Socket 1366 motherboards.

If you're going to buy RAM, I would suggest that you go for 3x single 2GB or 4GB DDR3 1.5V modules:
eg. http://www.prophecy.co.za/kingston-valueram-kvr1333d3n92g-ddr1333-desktop-p-37232.html / http://www.prophecy.co.za/corsair-cml4gx3m1a1600c9-vengeance-ddr31600-desktop-p-105557.html

Faster RAM is nice to have with the Socket 1366 if you're going to overclock, because then you might not have to change your memory multiplier. The default FSB is 133MHz (RAM speed of 1066MHz - RAM multiplier of 1:8). So if you're going to OC to 4.2GHz, 1600MHz memory modules are perfect, because 200MHz * 1:8 RAM multiplier = 1600MHz.

If you know what you're doing, you can simply adjust your memory multiplier so that you can have a FSB of 200MHz with DDR3 1333MHz RAM.

Actually meant 3x 2gb and not 3x 1 gb...my bad.And thanks for the advice.Pada you think 2 x 6850's is fine for now?Cause i'm getting them at a bargain.

2x HD6850's will run like a charm for any game on 1920x1080.

How much are you paying for the 2x HD6850's? R2800 in total?
