As some of you know I want to upgrade ram in a pc and a notebook the pc uses use ddr166 and I think the notebook uses ddr133. Could I just buy ddr400 for both and let them scale down? I know the notebook needs ram as it's a 2Ghz with 128mb ram, I think thats a pretty huge bottleneck, but I'm not sure if the pc needs ram, it's a P4 2.4Ghz and has 512mb ATM, would it make a difference to upgrade, also the pc only has two ports, would it make a difference if I buy 1x1Gb instead of 2x512mb as then I could add another Gb later. . . phew thats alot :D

Hmm... I can't remember :D

But what I can tell you is that usign 2x512 or 1x1024 only makes a difference in DDR2 RAM. Not really in DDR as 512x2 is only marginally faster in direct access than 1024x1.

So it'll be fine if I have a 1G in one slot and a 256mb in the other slot?

In an old computer, yes. Just put the bigger module in the first slot (0) and the smaller one in the next slot (1). Otherwise the computer may read your memory as 256MB instead of 1G+256MB.

Thanks, now I just have to find out if it can use ddr400

Aim a pm at The Techie (aka WKJ?:Beanie). He'll tell you in his sleep. I just can remember (damn damn damn)
