JOHANNESBURG - Questions are now being raised about what would happen to Cyril Ramaphosa's role as chairman of MTN and his other business interests if he gets voted as ANC Deputy President at the party conference in Mangaung.

Both the KwaZulu-Natal ANC and the party's women's league have nominated him.

But it is thought that he wouldn’t get a government job for quite some time, should he be successful in Mangaung.

The Ethics Institute of South Africa CEO Deon Russouw said a conflict of interest would start at soon as Ramaphosa would start showing interest in a government position.

“It’s quite clear that if one is about to assume a new postiton, then of course the conflict of interest would start at that point,” said Russouw.

The implications for Ramaphosa would be that he would have to leave his position at MTN and put his assets in a blind trust.

The ANC will hold their 53rd national elective conference in Mangaung from 16 to 20 December at the University of the Free State.

Pretty sure Jacob cleared this up ages ago, didnt he say something to the effect of why cant the political elite and family's have business interests?

I honestly dont think the ANC or MTN will care, if anyone complains he will just hand over the reins to the closest family member all the while still giving MTN an advantage.
 
Its the same predicament Tokyo was in, but dare I say Cyril has been a lot more successful and stands to lose out on more lucrative deals than when he is in Cabinet.

My guess is that he will not make himself available...

His membership of the NEC is part of the reason why he succeeds - he needs that patronage to continue. So, I don't think he'd decline the nomination he would just let someone like Baleka take dep. prez of the republic and leave himself to carry on biz as usual. Baleka sulked big time when Zuma appointed Kgalema over her and that's why she refused any other government position in favour of staying full-time in the ANC. She'd had a taste of the good stuff and it got yanked out her mouth.
 
I suspect a lot of the BEE millionaires / billionaires are not as rich as we may think. A lot of their shares/wealth does not belong to them, but they are merely "warehousing" it for those comrades who cannot publicly be seen to have a part of it.
 
Ramaphosa is chairman of MTN but his company Shanduka has has bought a stake in MTN's Nigerian operations. That's another tight spot.
 
This is why they are trying to push things like the secrecy bill through.

No matter what is ethical or not the cANCer will do as they want.
