Johannesburg - Business leaders must bear part of the blame for a call to nationalise South Africa's mines, according to National Planning Commission deputy chairperson Cyril Ramaphosa.

"The mining companies got together with the ministry and agreed on a transformation charter," Ramaphosa said in an address at the Gordon Institute of Business Science in Johannesburg.

"Nearly all of them have not lived up to that transformation agenda. They planted seeds of dissension for the future. It is only now that the mining industry is waking up and saying: 'Wow, maybe we should have done certain things to forestall this'," he was quoted as saying in the Business Report on Monday.

Calls for the government to seize mines, banks and land are being made by the ANC Youth League, saying South Africa's black majority still does not have an adequate stake in the country's economy.

The ANC agreed in November to an independent study of whether nationalisation is viable and to debate the findings of the study next year.

The nationalisation drive stemmed from "a measure of deep frustration by young people, who are unemployed", Ramaphosa said.

"They see these big corporations raking in a lot of money, and they also see that these corporations are not transforming in the way that was agreed," he said.

Like that's going to change in any way when mines are nationalized. The money is just going to end up in different pockets, that's all. Instead of the mine bosses, the ANC cadres will rake in the cash. Young people will still be unemployed or working for minimum wages.

How exactly nationalisation will benefit everyone is beyond me... The problem is the people on the ground that vote in favour of nationalisation do not understand the ramifications. If nationalisation goes through and fails, the ANC will have no one to blame but themselves.

Ramaphosa should have said this a very long time ago instead of saying it now. It is true that mining bosses (both black and white mining bosses) have largely neglected communities in which they operate. Ramaphosa's silence all these years have resulted in political businessmen such as Julius Malema capitalizing in the shortfalls of previous ANC administrations. Malema knows that people are angry and hungry because ANC elites scored big during the BEE years and forgot that poor people exist in SA. Malema is just making millions being paid by failed and indebted BEE tycoons to nationalize mines. It is so scary that people on the ground are singing the "economic freedom in our lifetime" chorus which doesn't make sense. I will an unpopular thing that all South Africans are to blame for the state of affairs we see now. We all live in a country that has a large population of poor people. We should have played our part in helping the country instead of just working hard and paying tax and then saying we have done enough. That would have been enough in a country like Australia or Canada but not in an African country. We are all educated, we read the news and we all know that an African state's chances of being politically unstable is high and yet we choose to adopt an attitude of blaming the government and wishing to one day say "I told you so". We sit in our comfort zones and don't actively participate in politics and that lives room for greedy and extremely immoral people like Julius Malema coming to take up space in a very large organization to loot. We cannot let politicians govern this country without our involvement. So this attitude of us saying poor black people are lazy and always want this and want that doesn't work. We should be doing something instead of taking the easy way and ranting (like I'm ranting now ).

Having poor people living in your house might be noble but definitely not what I mean by doing our part to help this country. Firstly having poor people live with me would be intrusive and unsustainable, extremely unsustainable. I was thinking of something sustainable like education. Maybe go to a township school and give lectures and tell young poor kids what you know. I'm sure there are other things. I gave a very short speech during the tax payer money wasting NYDA's youth festival and I said it must be made illegal for teenagers and poor people in developing countries to fall pregnant. Some Portuguese woman verbally "attacked" me for my statement after I left the stage.

1. Poor education means people don't have the skills and are not productive when they leave school.
2. Potential employers are forced to discriminate against those who don't have skills or who aren't productive, as the value of their labour is not worth the minimum wage and thus they don't get hired.

The way I see it, JZ and his homeboys feel they can openly sign an MOA with satan himself, hire the tokoloshe as minister of defense, re-introduce Droit du Seigneur (the medieval first night custom with newlywed brides), rape, murder and pillage and STILL get away with it by simply blaming apartheid for every ANC failing ever. It's the ace up their sleeve and they'll play it until... How did JZ put it, oh yes, until Jesus returns.
