If there is a silver lining to the dark cloud of Jacob Zuma’s re-election as ANC president it is the prospect of Cyril Ramaphosa playing a more active role in politics.

Without that, a Zuma second term, stretching to 2019 is, in the hackneyed words of former prime minister John Vorster, “too ghastly to contemplate”.

Motlanthe’s withdrawal from the race for the ANC deputy presidency was strategically smart for the “forces for change” because it cleared the way for Ramaphosa. Although Ramaphosa is favoured by many Zuma supporters, he is of a different ilk. There are no allegations against him of corruption or serial philandering. His vast BEE wealth makes it unlikely that he will plunder the public purse in the way that Zuma and company have over the past five years.

Ramaphosa has his enemies. At the start of the Farlam commission of inquiry into the Marikana massacre there was a misdirected attempt to suggest he had blood on his hands because of e-mails between him and various actors. In fact he said nothing untoward.

Now there is every prospect that he could take over as the country’s president in 2014, by which time Zuma will be 72. If, against expectations, Zuma does stay in charge until the ANC’s 2017 elective conference, Ramaphosa will be in pole position to be elected party president.

What irony that will be for his nemesis, Thabo Mbeki. There is already irony in that the three who contested the ANC deputy presidency this week, Ramaphosa, Mathews Phosa and Tokyo Sexwale, were once accused of plotting against Mbeki.

The rest of the ANC’s top six are uninspiring, with little prospect of halting the party’s downward spiral. A century after its formation, the ANC returned to its birthplace to prepare for its own demise.

I have to agree with this.

I think Ramaphosa realised the only he'd get to the Presidency is by going through the Deputy Presidency. He dropped his Presidential bid in the previous election because he realised taking Zuma on then wasn't going to fly, so he shifted tactics.

I'm not so sure that he'll be that great though. He's still bound by the ANC, and the people that put Zuma there can take Ramaphosa away if he doesn't toe the line.

What does it say about him that he is willing to associate with these people ?
"These people"? Ramaphosa is a dyed in the wool ANC member, always has been. He's probably the longest serving member of the ANC NEC.

Which is what has kept the ANC from being far worse than it is.

Mbeki let those with HIV/AIDS die. Ramaphosa let the miners at Marikana die. At least Zumatello cottoned on the fact that the living have stuff to loot.

I'm not so quick to put my hope into a politician to be honest. Especially one whose business interests are inextricably linked to government policy in South Africa and in other countries. Yes he will take a back seat in his businesses like Tokyo did, but the benefits to Shanduka having their former Chairman in 2nd highest post are gonna be huge. And with Shanduka expanding ever more into Africa, having the diplomatic might of Cyril "behind them" will certainly be a bonus.

Cyril is an opportunist of note and nothing good can come from the ANC.

Ag I still believe that the countries future is the DA and if they can somehow get Clever trevor ,they can accelerate their support.Cyril is good if he plays a strong role and hopefully he can become president but he is still a politician.Surely they cant be all under the same roof cyril who must be a capitalist ,with the commies and costatu and zuma who you could describe as a speech reader as not sure on his policy views.Hopefully this could lead to some sort of split and then I believe the DA has a chance although not right now.We had Madiba as a miracle ,maybe who knows we might have hellen zille or Lindiwe wearing a number 6 jersey to give say Siya kolisi the world cup in South africa in 2019

He did? Let us wait for the commission to conclude before we make bold statements like this.

given that he is now vice president, that commission is going the same way as the arms deal commission,

Woot? Bwaaaaaahahaha are u joking... if DA can't run 1 province then what about 9.... what a mess it could be

Is that sarcasm?.ANC cant even organise a conference where everything runs on time , yet alone a province. Was Limpopo not put under administration? How many ANC provinces did well in DG audit.Facts dont lie.Argument finished .Thank you
