Ramdisks.

Only really used them with linux which allows you to load the entire OS into ram, makes things bloody fast.

I used to use a RAMdisk for our Minecraft server. It [obviously] runs at amazing speeds so everything around it is really fast. It's quite useful for when you work with large files too, ie 100MB+ photoshop files.

I'm using RAMDisk in Windows 7 x64, otherwise my MySQL database is too slow for my purpose.
I'm also setting all my temporary folders (including Firefox's) to the RAM drive, and it does run very well.

In Linux (Ubuntu) I also used tmpfs to store all my log files and temporary files. The other reason I used it was to reduce the amount of write operations to my SSD.

If/when I get another 8GB of ram I will possibly look into it again, I didn't notice much change though when I tried it.

I use it for my temp internet and windows files, also using RAMDISK.
