Rand breaks through R16 to US Dollar

Really, really sad to see such a beautiful country slide :(

The Rand depreciates (With just about every other emerging market currency) and you see it as the country sliding???

Anyway, the Rand weakening has been great investment wise, but I could almost cry if I think about how much better I could have timed it. Lost a couple hundred grand due to poor timing by me :(

I feel torn. My hubby earns USD. Food however is getting so expensive. A pack of three peppers was R36.00 from P 'n P... 4 avocados is R50. Prices will vary from area to area, but if we are going to import food, we are in a lot of trouble.

Erm...Avos are out of season and are very expensive at the moment. Especially if you buy the packs of "ripe" avos at PnP or Woolies. They are not imported either.

Cause and effect. The country is in such a cr*p state which is causing the currency to slide, not the other way round. Also, ZAR is very high up the list of worst performing currencies, so your comment "with just about every other emerging market currency" is a bit disingenuous.

Bell peppers were R7 each at PnP down here in CT last I checked and yeah, avos are out of season hence the price

at the market in Verulam, you can get bell pepers 3 for R5. :D

Avos are out of season! Bad, bad example ;-)

I wonder who we are going to blame this ti.......ooops to late.

I'm waiting for the Iwisa revolt. Due to the drought and high reliance upon maize imports (in USD) we are going to see pap prices going through the roof. Perhaps that's something the poor can understand? Ultimately they'll suffer more, at least most of us have some sort of buffer and aren't playing jump rope with the bread line.

Some of them are. I bought Spanish Avos at Woolies last year.

Not just the rand... also other crap that has been making headlines now days.

I have to pay for my VPS Server around March... hope the rand won't be disloyal to me then.

Only this wasn't common depreciation, it was an overnight billions-of-rands freefall brought on by an idiot president who simply has no clue of how the world works.

Poor you.. much investment, such affected, wow. Seen the price of import mealie meal lately?
