Rand hits 13 month high vs $

SA has only the WC and gold going for it.

I would suggest you have a look at Stats SA regarding south africa's mining output. it would seem you have forgotten platinum and coal.

and uranium and manganese and copper and....

Yes yes .... let's not go into specifics. The gold is what CHIEFLY keeps us afloat - coal, copper and platinum are not needed in ailing economies.

Platinum accounts for more of our mining production than gold

Ok point taken SA has gold, and platinum and uranium and so on.... and that's what saving our a-sses and allowing the BS in govt to go on.

+1 VERBOSITY and +10 IRRELEVANCY.

Well then go live in the US if you think it's going balls up, most of us don't see things as doom and gloom.

I think our country needs to make its economy more diverse. Precious metals is a recourse that can and will be exhausted at some point and what then? Why dont we use the iron, gold, uranium that we mine and use it to build up a manufacturing and processing economy for export. Instead of exporting raw materials for processing and them merely re-importing them at a higher price, why not do this ourselves?

Because we're too expensive at it.

I'll fire back: you go live in Palestine and join your brothers in martyrdom.

When have I ever defended Palestine? I'm anti-Israel as many Jews (Stephen Fry for one) and Christians in the west are, I'm not pro-Palestine.

Besides I'm not religious so the Holy Disney land does not appeal to me.

Well take your own advice and fight your fellow brethren or don't give bollox advice to others (like me)?

You missed the sarcasm. It's explained later on in the thread. Sometimes I assume people will understand.

But the effect is correct when applied throughout the economy - expensive Rand and exports suck, cheap Rand and everything we pull in (and we make very little here) is expensive - increases inflation.

There is no way in heck, that the SA worker can compete with the Chinese one. No way - impossible. Why do you think the Dutch brought people from Indonesia and British from India? The same goes for European workers.

The problem is when they sre there long enough they want pay like the locals:D

So then we import again:(

So if I understand everything correctly.

Lets say 1$ = 1Rand it will only be expensive to live when the current prices for food/petrol ect ect stay the same. But when it goes down then it will be better in a way. But we can't expect to pay

R10 or a burger and in in the US they pay $1 a burger cause the its going to be expensive.

So why when the Rand strengthened did price for petrol/brent crude oil not come down?

Because we still have to pay for our oil in dollars, and the weaker the dollar becomes the more expensive oil becomes. Also oil speculation is becoming increasinly popular. Remember when we had $147 a barrel oil before the crash. Speculation in Oil has raised the price 40-50 percent since March. The big investment banks have rented tankers to store oil since then when they bought insane amounts of oil at the bottom of the market and are going to sell at the top of the market before the next crash.

Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan and Goldman were doing this from what I remember.

It is a catch 22 situation.
