So I awoke this morning to a notification from my Wise banking app that a previously unknown to me merchant in the US, Immortal Laces, had done an $0.00 active card check on my debit card.

I immediately froze the card but I’m thinking that cancelling it and ordering a replacement might be the thing to do.

Am I over-reacting? Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so what did you do?

No, but I would do the same, if card details were expose to criminals, this might be the first check to see if details are legitimate.

It's odd because I rarely use the actual card so I'm trying to track down when I have used it and not tapped or used a virtual.

$0? Bloody hall that’s a lot of money for you to never get back. You were right to cancel the card. /s
It's not the amount - it's that someone has my [now verified] card details.

Why would you not cancel a card if you lost control over it?

Yeah cancel it and get a replacement. This is a pre-check before they start their swindling.

Didn't want to trek down to the bank and print a new card and update all my streaming services and waste an hour +. Place in Canada was hacked and they just run a bunch of card number blocks. A week later I got my $1 back and I moved on with my life. To each their own.

I use virtual cards for online services.

Not only did they "run the number" of my [physical] card, but they were successful which means they can go to town with my money anytime they want.

Not cancelling a compromised card would be negligent and would make claiming back any subsequent fraudulent charges more difficult.
