What you’re looking at above is categorically not a replacement for the Range Rover Velar. In fact, we’re told this new Range Rover GT will be a “fifth member of the family” and that it’ll arrive in all-electric form.

It’ll be built in Halewood on a new Electric Modular Architecture (EMA) platform which allows for all-wheel drive and a flat floor. Although hybrid versions will arrive later down the line. Might that be when the slightly coupe-ified Velar retires?

There’s no word on where exactly the GT will sit in the Range Rover erm… range, but we do know it’ll be lower than an Evoque but as long as a Range Rover Sport. Essentially a coupe crossover with four frameless doors, then. Looks a little bit like an Evoque Convertible but with a hardtop roof in the single image released so far too.

Inside it’ll be a 2+2 layout as standard but with the option of a rear bench, while there’s lots of talk of “reductive principles” and “reduced visual and acoustic noise”. And yes, it was penned before Gerry McGovern left the company. How could you tell?

The Range Rover GT, pictured here wrapped in camouflage, is set to usher in a “new expression” of the grand tourer formula, the British marque says. “The Range Rover GT will redefine the grand touring segment with the ability to deliver beautiful and engaging GT poise, proportions and long-distance refinement, while offering capabilities no conventional GT can match,” said Martin Limpert, Managing Director of Range Rover.

The GT will launch with a battery-electric (BEV) powertrain, though the automaker has confirmed a hybrid (HEV) variant is planned for the future. The GT will be the first model underpinned by Land Rover’s new EMA platform. “The result is the most car-like, yet unmistakably capable, Range Rover ever created, now possible on our electrified EMA architecture – complementing our existing powertrain portfolio to deliver a complete set of options for every customer need. Its blend of effortless EV performance, first-class long-haul refinement and all-terrain capability is pure Range Rover; while its calming interior previews our vision of a modern grand tourer,” said Limpert.

With the GT’s interior, Range Rover aims to evoke “purity, precision and quiet modernity” through a minimalistic, yet tech-laden, facia featuring a new “floating” central infotainment display and, sited fore a two-spoke steering wheel, digital instrumentation.

The standard recipe for British luxury has always been reassuringly predictable: take a towering, brick-shaped vault of absolute opulence, line it with the finest hides, and give it the ability to conquer a muddy hillside or cruise down a boulevard with equal disdain. But the rules of the road are changing, and the newly teased Range Rover GT is a fascinating, low-slung curveball that completely tilts the axis of the brand. Purists might scoff at the idea of a Range Rover trying to mimic a sleek, fastback grand tourer - after all, a proper Solihull product is supposed to look like a rolling country manor. But, seeing this new dynamic shape breaking cover confirms that the luxury marque is tired of building high-riding fortresses and is ready to chase a sporty, road-biased edge.

The visual drama here is entirely dictated by the wind tunnel and a heavy dose of modern stance. It is easily the lowest vehicle in the brand's history, dropping the traditional two-box SUV silhouette for a heavily raked, fastback rear screen that drops sharply just past the rear wheels. Opinion : AI strips the Range Rover GT’s camouflage – and reveals a new SD1 - AROnline​

Range Rover has previewed its sleek new electric GT beneath an elaborate camouflage wrap. I asked ChatGPT to remove the disguise, and the result looks uncannily like the 21st-century Rover SD1 we have been waiting 40 years to see.

The new Range Rover GT is completing its final testing beneath a specially designed camouflage wrap – but its long, low fastback proportions are already plainly visible. The low-slung grand tourer is hidden beneath an elaborate black, white and gold camouflage wrap while prototype cars complete their final road-testing programme.

We can see its proportions, glasshouse, lights and most of its principal feature lines, but the finer details remain deliberately obscured.

So on behalf of AROnline I decided see if that visual clutter could be cleaned up – I supplied ChatGPT with Range Rover’s official photographs and asked it to remove the camouflage while retaining the prototype’s visible shape and proportions.

What it produced are speculative, naturally – artificial intelligence can’t see bodywork concealed beneath a vinyl wrap – but what emerged was rather striking.

Underneath the disguise appears to be the Rover SD1 successor I’ve spent the past 40 years hoping somebody would build.

In a nutshell – it’s a large, imposing British executive fastback. Remind you of anything?

The original SD1 arrived in June 1976 as a radical break from the Rover P6 and Triumph 2000/2500 it replaced. David Bache’s styling gave it the visual drama of an Italian grand tourer, but combined that glamour with five-door practicality. Its Daytona-influenced nose, sweeping flanks and fastback rear made the established three-box competition look remarkably conservative.

This new GT is not an SD1 pastiche, it feels remarkably like a knowing wink to its ancestor – the connection is conceptual rather than retro.

Both cars are grand-tourers cast as practical five-door hatchbacks, and reject mainsteam shapes in favour of high drama.

Meet the Range Rover GT: Brand’s first all-electric EMA-platform model confirmed

Range Rover has confirmed the addition of the new GT as the fifth member of its model line-up as an all-electric luxury model.

The Range Rover GT will be the first all-electric Range Rover to be built on the company's new EMA platform. Production will take place at Halewood in the United Kingdom alongside internal combustion engine and hybrid models.

Initially, the GT will be offered as a battery electric vehicle (BEV), with a hybrid electric (HEV) derivative planned later in its lifecycle.

Interior

The GT's cabin adopts a minimalist layout with a strong focus on technology and reduced visual clutter.

The traditional instrument cluster has been replaced by a driver display, while a new single-screen infotainment system forms the centrepiece of the dashboard. A full-width concealed air vent stretches across the cabin, continuing a familiar Range Rover design feature.
