A friend is stuck between these choices? Which do you prefer and why ... Budget of R700 000 ...

Range Rover Sport. I once saw an X5 battling to tow a jetski on the beach and thought to myself Id never want one. Also funnily enough TopGear was reviewing the Range Rover Sport (the big V8 petrol Supercharged one) last night. It was the one when the Army guys are chasing him with a tank in an effort to get a lock on him. They reckoned the RR is a truly superb vehicle in all ways.

Wow that episode is like 10 years old :p Ok maybe not that old but its ooold..

Range rover if he's wants a real mans car or X5 if he wants a footballers wife car ;)

RRS is also a real off-road machine with the performance to go along with it.. One of my family members has one, awesome machine

2010 RRS Brochure - http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/download/file.php?id=1666

Some nice improvements from the current model, interior and exterior.

"But the most significant changes on the 2010 Range Rover Sport are to its powertrains. The vehicle can be ordered with either a 510 horsepower LR-V8 5.0-liter supercharged mill, or a 375 hp LR-V8 5.0 liter naturally aspirated engine. The new naturally aspirated vehicle can hit 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, while the supercharged variant takes just 5.9 seconds. Both LR-V8 engines are mated to the ZF HP28 six-speed automatic transmission.

Range Rover if he's prepared to pull his hair out everytime something goes wrong.

Remember, Range Rovers have heated back windows to keep your hands warm while you push them.

Let me fixed few things, its not a RR sport but the TDV8 SE 3.2l (White in Color) VS the X5 3.0l (Goldish color) both 2009 Models ...

Just checked 3.2 doesn't exist but 3.6l ... i think he gave me the incorrect info but anyway, thanks guys... I guess RR is better ...

Am worried about the resell value since Ford took over?

Range Rover Sport is the best of the bunch. Consumption is much worse than the X5 though, probably on par with my 5.7 Hemi. eg 20-22L x 100kms.

You mean when Land Rover Assist's techies push it ... exactly why LR has Maintenance plans on all vehicles except the Defenders - we all know you only need some pliers and a piece of wire to fix those :)

Erm, you are slightly behind the times ... it is Tata now

The Range Rover Sport is an awesome car, if your friend is going for the V8 supercharged, the fuel consumption; even if he is a wealthy man or lady will feel it ... its ridiculous on fuel .... you need to also note that the shape has been out for a while now as well

X5, is nice ... LOL, thats all i can say about it, late 07 the shape came out, and it more current than the Range ... lotsa extras on the beemer, id get the 35D

Between the two, i go for the Range, but not in V8 form, get the diesel sport ... that a fairly new variant they introduced ...

if I had a choice, id get the new X6 5.0i Twin Turbo from BMW ... or wait for the X5/X6 ///M also with twin scroll twin turbo :) ... 0-100 in 4.7s ...

Its a TDV8 (Diesel) ...

I agree BCO. The X5 is much better, nothing can compete with German technology. Not even RR. The RR Sport is a lot heavier on juice than the X5.

The RR weighs 2480kg where the X5 weighs 2245kg.......running costs on the RR is also a more than the X5.

If it was me choosing, I'd definitely get the X5. It is a great car.

I'm a big fan of the 35d (is that engine actually available on the X5 yet, btw). It's damn efficient and very powerful - a much better motor than the TDV8 IMO. Plus the X5 in general just seems more solid than the RR.

When you buying a RR or X5 I hardly think running costs are your top worry. And if they are then you probably shouldnt be shopping in that price range.
