Needed to reinstall a Dell Latitude D520 from scratch.

I wasn't impressed.

HP laptops, in comparison, is a breeze to restore to factory defaults - just pop in the restore CD's and all is well.

Not so with Dell - this particular driver cd won't let you install the drivers - you had to go to Dell's site to find the drivers.

And, to add insult to injury, you waste a lot of time in getting to the right place, it's just going round and round.

Bleh.

I hear you. Had to re-install a D620 on Monday. Took about 8 hours hunting that website for drivers etc.

Funny, redone my Dell D620 twice using the discs that it came with and all drivers were o.k. and on the discs.

That is very strange. I had a D500, D600 and now a D620. I've re-installed all of my Dell noteboks OS many times over, without ANY driver issues whatsoever. In fact, I also have an HP notebook (new) that came pre-loaded with Vista, I had to hunt for drivers but got it going eventually. IMO the Dell machines where easier to do a fresh installation ;)

I got a Dell 1720 last weekend, came with Vista - which was promptly removed in favour of XP. The driver installation was a breeze with the included driver cd, which caters all drivers and applications for Vista and XP, both 32 and 64bit versions.

I also appreciated that they actually included the Vista installation CD and did not expect you to write your own system restore CDs like most Acers and HPs I've had to deal with.

I used to be a bit anti-dell..but my opinion has been swayed by a last few experiences, which has all been good...touch wood :D

I've also never had problems with Dell installations and probably done about 150 or more.

All you do is goto http://support.dell.com and type in your TAG number and it will come up with the exact drivers you need for your laptop. You can also check the original spec as well.

as for the hour-long driver hunts on Dell's website, just give it your tag and the site will locate everything for you. Works like a charm ...
