Periodically, more for the sake of nostalgia than anything else, I try to fire up an IRC client to re-visit the world I knew so well back in the days of dialup. However, all I ever get in exchange for my efforts is a whole lot of pain from ident / identd when trying to connect.
I've tried forwarding port 113 to my local machine (which I would prefer not to do), I've tried beating my PC with various Tupperware containers and as a very last resort I drank a beer whilst staring out the window. None of these cunning strategies did anything to improve the situation, although the last one did relieve my aggravation somewhat.
What's the dealio - does IRC only really work if you have a completely "open" connection (no NAT firewall)? Does it only work for mIRC users or those who are prepared to go to the ridiculously great lengths of installing, configuring and maintaining their own identd server?
Trawling the web for solutions to this problem seems to only lead to condescending replies from old skool *NIX punks who are used to compiling their software by punch card, can whistle fax messages to each other and take time out from listening to their Queen retrospective collections to come up with useful replies like "Whats your problem with identd?" (really - http://www.silug.org/lists/silug-discuss/200110/msg00075.html )
Discuss amongst yourselves. Minus points for condescending replies, unless they're funny.
