Rant

Precisely Utternutter... same reason I bought my car...

I could have spent half of what I did and got a car that goes from A to B.. but I wouldn't have all the safety features.. and I have to admit, cruise control on the Merc is just such a nice thing.. i can breeze to work in such a nice and casual way.. :)

65km/ph in the fast lane? :p

nope...its a C200K... it happily cruises at 120kp/h... and i don't have to do anything.

That could be nifty on long stretches (think: Cape Town > JHB), but doesn't it lower your concentration?
I've never driven with cruise control so I wouldn't know, but from the way I see, you've got less to concentrate on (ie: speed limit) so your attention could wander off (and leave you (and your car) in a ditch somewhere).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing it, just trying to understand it better. :)

I must admit, the Cape Town drivers seem the worst of a bad bunch. Within 5 hours of my first Cape Town holiday in years some guy had managed to swerve onto the wrong side of a main road (at 120 km/h) and kindly remove my side view mirror, I ended up flying down the emergency lane.

In 8 days I was almost taken out countless times culminating with an exciting drive down the N1 where some guy in the slow lane decided my lane was better, despite the fact I was still in the lane. I had to brake sharply almost taking out the other two cars in our convoy.

A good summary: Durban drivers are just plain bad, in Cape Town its not so much driving as aiming your car and in Gauteng the drivers can drive really well, they just choose to drive like a**holes.

Cape Town drivers are too busy looking for the mountain which they use to navigate their way around.

I dont get the car thing...they all achieve the same thing. Get in, turn it on, drive to destination, get out. A R200 000 car does that just as well as a R500 000 car. And dont give me the speed, comfort rubbish. If you live in your car then it's maybe important that it has a butt warmer..otherwise...feh. Now diamonds...that's important :D

I sped 2-3 hours in my car each day, and that's just to work and back. For that percentage of my waking hours, I want something comfortable, with lots of features. And safe.
