The Ixopo Regional Court has handed a life sentence to a man convicted of raping a nine-year-old girl, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.
Captain Thulani Zwane said the man, 24, raped the girl in July 2011 in Nokweja.
The girl's mother had left her and her younger brother alone to attend a church meeting.
"The accused came looking for her girlfriend and could not find her," said Zwane.
"He noticed that the children were left alone and raped the victim in front of her younger brother."
The girl told her mother about the incident and a case of rape was opened with police.
The man was arrested soon after.
