Rasberry PI help media server

From my understanding the Pi 3 copes pretty well with H.265.

Is this not the case? Only reason I ordered one was because I read it does. And I only placed my order yesterday :(

Edit : The article I read before biting the bullet and ordering - https://osmc.tv/2016/02/raspberry-pi-3-announced-with-osmc-support/

The new quad core CPU will bring smoother GUI performance. There have also been recent improvements to H265 decoding. While not hardware accelerated on the Raspberry Pi, the new CPU will enable more H265 content to be played back on the Raspberry Pi than before.

Will need to test again. Tested when I got it, and it wasn't smooth.

Under powered for what? Had one of the original Pi and yeah agreed that was not quite good enough for anything above 720 but the Pi 3s are more than powerful enough for a basic media center. Easily renders 1080...

Pi Zero can playback 1080p smoothly and its a slightly overclocked Pi 1.

My 2c
Use OpenELEC - very easy to install, very fast running on my Pi3. (runs quick on Pi2 as well).
More importantly, install "Emby" media server on the PC you're sharing the media from. It will make the whole experience 10x better.

If HEVC/H.265, then yes. If not, then no.

Pi 3 does not play h.265 well at all. Not sure if this will improve with software updates, but afaik there's no hardware decoding.
I've tested it, no go. Just can't decompress fast enough.
To be fair, the only thing that's gonna play h.265 at the moment is probably a core i3 or higher.
(If your PC fast enough and you're running Emby, you can transcode on the fly. Mine isn't, so I just use Handbrake to convert to H264)

I recently swopped out my Pi2 server with a Pi3 and it is so much faster now.

Server is setup for Plex Media Server, Sonarr, Couch Potato, NZBGet, Webmin and some other goodies. It also acts as a NAS sharing some USB drives over wifi and lan.

I have another Pi2 which is used as the media player, running Rasplex. Very slick, and much better than the Plex app for my TV.

Correct. Raspberry PI does not have hardware decode support for H265 (HEVC) and will probably choke if you try software H265 playback directly (untested). PS, I have HEVC playing back perfectly now on the Amlogic S805 (Odroid) with tweaked OpenElec version. Also ordered a $10 Orange PI One as a second H265 player (Allwinner H3 chip).

Ah yes, duelmeister you Odroid owning @#$%#** - I should've bought one when you did when the Rand was stronger. That said, good to hear you've finally tested the H.265 and that it works. I still want to buy one at some point.

So I finally got it :D

Its the PI 3 model B

Now stupid question I guess where did you guys get a PSU? or you using something else

Used my iPad charger with some usb cable I found around. Works 100s

I tried a few stuff even my USB power bank that gives 2.1 amps. The red LED just stays on

You sure you formatted your SD correctly? I would triple check because the Pi has no BIOS, and the red LED is more of a good sign. Make sure you're imaging it with the correct file and not the compressed one you download.

Yeah, I've run mine with a very weak psu and it still booted. Was just unstable. So if your psu is just a bit underpowered it wouldn't just do nothing.
