Rate Hike Nightmare Looming

<T-BONE MODE>

But this is good, since growing inflation means growing economy, which is good.

Can't help but wonder if these guys have a clue what they're doing.

Oh yes, they know.

Their aim is to steal as much as possible in as shortest time as possible.
(before everything collapses):D

When the new year arrived we were hoping for a better year than 2007. Not even 4 months into this year, and it's already more than a nightmare than anyone can take in a year.:mad:

True ,
I had high expectations of this year.

Not anymore.

Although the current economic crisis isn't unique to SA. What does bother me is that the dollar is dropping to record lows, but the rand is one of the few currencies to weaken against it.

I suspect the SARB will try find reasons not to hike. Though given what the rand has done that may be not possible.

I have one thing to say to anyone hear who moans about anything happening here.....If you did not get off your lazy a$$ and go and vote then you have NO right to complain. Maybe now some of you will go and do so in the next election.
Remember no vote is a vote for the ANC

And a week after that Eskom decided to go belly up.
That is the reason the rand cannot hold its own against even the drowning $.

The problem is we buy and sell all our commodities with the greenback. Perhaps moving to switch gold from US$ to EUR or GBP would soften the impact of the weakening dollar, similarly all other exports (steel, copper, diamonds, etc.)

They should have put the rate up 0.5% in January and a further 0.5% in April which would have meant that by this time next year The Repo Rate would have been on a decline already.
Political Pressure in my opinion curtailed January's increase which is now costing us a weaker Rand amongst other things.

i agree with you to a large extent. there was more than enough ammunition in January to increase 50bp. Now they are going to have to try convince the market that they are still on track to be within the target by next year. a difficult call given that inflation excluding petrol and food costs is running close to 6%.

i suppose let's await todays release of the Quarterly Bulletin and retail sales to see whether they can hold on to the slowing growth and consumer spending story.

I don't think an increase in the repo would have helped the rand though. international investors would have just jumped off the interest rate differential story and punished the rand because they would have said that the hike would slow growth in SA. The rand was always against in an environment of risk aversion. again its liquidity and lack of exchange controls for foreigners becomes a thorn in its side when such things happen.

If this happens.... its going to make for desperate people on the property market... maybe then I can afford the flat I want :D

What happened to all that amazing growth the ANC was so proud of?

Pay attention!
Sheesh.

We have had sustained growth in:
Service failures
Power failures
Interest rates
Corruption
Crime
.....

See - GROWTH!
