My mothers 638 SUV battery is dead after just 2.5 years.
My fathers 652 bakkie battery is dead after 2 years.

Both are Raylite "Silver Calcium", and both are stamped 0812.

Is this a bad batch?

I doubt anyone at Raylite cares, but I'll be buying Midas batteries to replace these. My trucks' batteries are Midas, and they're over 5 years old. So much for paying extra for a "good" brand.

Get a varta, my oem battery is a varta and it has lasted 3,5 years. About 2 months ago I left the lights on and drained the battery, it's still working now after roadside assist used one of those booster packs to get it to work again.

2 years is acceptable for most batteries, that do only short trips.

Cars that regularly get longer drives at > 2500 rpm, have batteries that last longer. Maintenance free is just a marketing gimmick.

Get your battery water level checked every six months. If you have a ctek charger, perform a desulphation charge cycle once every 6 months. This really extends the battery life.

2 years is okayish.

I like Willard, my bakkie came with one from the factory and it lasted 6 years, replaced it with another Willard.

Shop around for a new battery, loads now imported from Korea that come with a 2 year guarantee.

I had a raylite it died after 18 months :(

Mine went also after 2 years and few days.
Got a ATLAS now.

I always thought Raylite was one of those budget brands to be avoided.

My experience is that "2 years" is a manufacturers' attempt to "manage expectations". Unless my batteries have been abused, I consider 2 years to be a premature failure due to a manufacturing fault, or planned obsolescence. I generally get 5 years minimum over the 8 vehicles we operate, not to mention our static installations.

Do you have any evidence for that desulphation process? I've a vehicle battery last 9 years without any special attention.

Not if the Battery Centre's salesman's bull**** is to be believed. Come to think of it, I had a boat battery die after just 1 season. That was also a Raylite. In future, Raylite and Battery Centre can shove it.

I see Duracell are now making car batteries, Im very excited about that.
