Hey folks!

I'm in the market for a new Headset, Keyboard and Mouse. I'll be using them for general internet browsing, some late night Java coding and a TON of gaming.

I'll be primarily playing FPS games, with the occasional MMO now and then.

With the above in mind, should I get a Logitech G35 Headset, Logitech G500 Mouse and Logitech G515 Keyboard?

Or should I go for a Razer Megalodon Headset, Razer Naga Mouse and Razer Lycosa Keyboard?

Are there any other options, I should look at?

Does Razer have good after sales service in SA? I'm under the impression that their products have the occasional lemon.

Thanks!

Well first off I should tell you my team is sponsored by SS, so some bias here :P

Mice category: Razer Deathadder or SteelSeries Xai or SteelSeries Kinzu depending on your budget. Xai is most expensive, DA middle and Kinzu cheapest. Compare their prices and specs to decide whats important to you. Personally I do not like Logitech products (and yes I have used them). If you dig Logitech look at a Mx518 or G9x (if you like customisation - different grips weights etc).

Keyboard category: I'm very happy with my SS 6gv2, but its quite pricey. Before this I was using a Razer Arctosa, great bang for buck keyboard. Personally I have no need for backlighting on a keyboard. If you want to consider another mechanical gaming keyboard, the Razer Blackwidow is apparently awesome. A lot of people love the logitech G11/15 keyboards, and I agree they look awesome, but from the 3 clanmates of mine who have had them, I have heard lots of complaints about the keys feeling cheap and rubbishy. Only used a G15 for a couple of hours and it felt weird because its so huge (version1, version 2 is smaller I guess) but I guess you could get used to it. Just make sure you have plenty of space on your desk.

Headset: Honestly you are not going to notice a big difference in "gaming performance" between SS Siberia V2, Razer Megalodon, Razer Charchar (ah god forgot the name, I had it before my siberias) - they are all gonna perform fine. Choose what fits your budget. If you want all-round performance (games + movies + music) I would also suggest looking at a pair of sennys as well. Also look at getting a decent sound card, even if its a cheapie. I would recommend the Asus Xonar DG, just got one myself (R300) and imo well worth it.

Finally, you haven't mentioned a mouse mat. I would really recommend a good one if you haven't got one already, they do make a big difference. Go for a SteelSeries Qck+ or Razer Goliathus and also go for the oversized/XXL editions, fractionally more expensive and way better. If you want to spend the cash, also check out the Qck+ Heavy (what I use), its 6mm thick and like playing on a mattress of awesome :D

In a nutshell, I wouldn't recommend going for one brand across the board. Choose exactly what fits your need/budget for each peripheral. Personally I am a SS fan these days ;)

I've been looking for the same things for ages, I've eventually come up with the following after looking at Logitech, Razer, Microsoft, Steelseries ect ect

Headphones: ROCCAT Kave 5.1ch gaming headset with mic
Keyboard: ROCCAT Isku Still waiting for it to come out.
Mouse: ROCCAT Kone+, Black with Multi-color led
Mouse Pad: ROCCAT Alumic, double-sided with either speed or control

Have a look at Razer also: http://www.razerzone.com/

Here's a list of keyboards you can look at also: http://mygaming.co.za/forum/showthread.php/14085-New-keyboard?p=441481&viewfull=1#post441481

Everyone has their own taste in things of course, hope this helps! :)

just wanted to add a +1 on the roccat kaves, they are brilliant and forgot to mention them. They block out almost ALL noise though, so you need to decide if you want that.

Wow great posts thank you VERY much guys!

I've been gathering info and procrastinating since 2007. Now that I finally have the money and time to make a choice, I find myself at a loss and overcome with so many brands.

My headset MUST have a Mic! The earmuffs should preferably be covered in leather/material and not that spongey foam stuff. The headset should have a braided cord, Mic on the LEFT hand side and USB. The "puck"/volume adjustment controls should be installed on the cable and be able to attach/clip to a shirt. The volume control button should have a Mute Mic feature. The earmuffs should have noise cancellation capabilities.

My keyboard NEEDS light up keys. Independent Macro keys aren't necessary. Wrist support/guard is mandatory! Easily cleaned keys and surfaces.

My mouse needs a TON of buttons, so that I'm able to program macros for my FPS and MMO games. It needs to be somewhat rugged, robust and a lil heavy (weights are optional).

Awesome post! Thank you for the information and especially for going so in depth into the different categoies. I really appreciate it!

I've noticed the Steel Series range, but haven't considered them. From what I saw on a Aion and Guild Wars brochure, they looked great albeit a lil too flashy for my taste. Love the reviews on the Xai and Kinzu.

I'm not sure if the Razer BlackWidow has an extended or long enough Keyboard wrist support. Is there a BIG difference in gaming standards, when one uses a Mechanical keyboard? I like the layout and function design of the SS Shift and 7G. 6GV2 would be perfect, but I don't know if it has wrist support?

I'd love a pair of Sennys! I'm considering the Razer Megaladon or a SS set. I'm not happy with the G35 layout. I have an Asus Xonar too and think its amazing. Its definitely given my Audio a new vibe. I really like that you can dismantle and pack up those SS headsets. That would be ideal for lans!

I'm aiming for a Razer mouse pad and think the Goliathus range would suite me just fine. I didn't know they came in different sizes. An XL one would be perfect!

Reckon you've just sold me on SS products. Definitely given me something to think about.

Thank you VERY much for the information and especially for that link with the Reviews.

I've seen photos of the Roccat Isku online and think its absolutely sexy - if not THE most stunning keyboard layout in awhile. Any idea on when its coming out?

What worries me about products like Razer, Roccat and Steelseries, is that if something were to break, would there be after market support for it, or would I have to go outside and bury it in my garden?

Razer Isku Q3 2011 :( ..as for the after market support that would be handled by the online store you bought it from, they will then send it back to the supplier and swap it our for you or give you credit, depending on the online store you buy it from.

afaik, Rebel Tech are the cheapest when it comes to Razer and ROCCAT, I will email Rebel Tech now and ask about the warranties on Razer/ROCCAT products.

Xai has 2 side buttons on each side. If you want more buttons you gonna have to go for one of those mmo-specific mice, those would probably be **** for FPS though only (if you are wanting to play competitivey though I guess). DeathAdder cheaper but has less buttons (only 2 on the left side).

No, there is not a big difference. In a nutshell each key has its own mechanical switch instead of pressing onto an electronic pad. It's meant to be quicker afaik. The point is the keys feel amazing, the kb looks nice if you are into the minimalistic styling and its sturdy as a brick - steel backplate (if you are into lanning). If you want a huge handrest, check out the 7G. This is just the upgraded version of the 6Gv2 which has audio/mic ports on the keyboard as well as an oversized wrist pad.

However, if flashy lights are your thing you should go with the razer blackwidow ultimate. This has it all, decent sized rest, all the macro and media keys you could want, backlight keyboard, mechanical e.t.c.

Check out a nice youtube review here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlWYLJIibxE

Headset as I explained is just a toss up, choose what you like. I really don't think there is much difference between the headsets you have mentioned. I am happy with my Siberia v2, before that I had a pair of Sennheiser PC-350, but those are going to set you back 2K.

SS Qck+ is way better than the razer goliathus imo, a lot of us cod4 players use the Qck+ as it is like hands down the best/smoothest mat even though there is a huge variance in the choice of mouse. Would strongly recommend that.

Logitech G35 if you don't have a soundcard.
MS Sidewinder X4/X6... x4 is good bang for buck and feels really solid.
I have a CM storm 5600dpi mouse and I love it...

+1 for razer goliauthus mouse pad... never thought a mouse pad would make much of a difference, but after recieving one as a gift I recommend them to everyone.

Personally I would go For the Logitechs' That mouse in particular is so comfortable, and I assume you meant the G15, freaking awesome keyboard, the screen and lightup keyboards are really handy
I find Razers a bit lacking in style and functionality :/

+1

I too have used all the other gaming brands, Microsoft, Razer, Logitech.

Steelseries stands out for me for one simple reason : Build Quality

Most of the other products I had died within a few months of heavy usage, I'm a competitive gamer that plays FPS and RTS (Quake Live and Starcraft II) and as such my hardware often gets used and abused for long hours. My Steelseries products have yet to show me any sign of wear and tear or degradation, so simply based on that if you are looking for a product that's going to last you a few good years, consider the Steelseries range.

Oh and also, you can't go wrong with a Sennheiser headset, but be aware that they can get really expensive, especially on the higher end range.
