RCT 850va UPS operating Wattage & temperature when not loaded

can anyone tell me what an RCT 850VAS should consume from the mains when it's plugged in but has nothing to drive on the output?
Mine seems to run at 20Watts and is always warm to the touch.
Not sure if it's operating in spec or not.

That sounds normal


All inverter have a certain amount they use just to be on

And naturally the charger runs almost constantly

20w sound super low
I assume that is while power is on (charger) assume fast charger will produce more heat than older models


You can expect worse when eskom is gone

Not running a standard battery, as with a standard battery a person wont be doing much with this size ups other than have enough power to finnish what you are doing quickly and do a shutdown

I added a fan to my ups when i still ran one

To cool it (during shedding)
Should have made that auto not manual

ie drilled some holes added a fan

It ran for long until i forgot to switch on the fan to cool it

Adding big batteries to a ups that wasn't designed to run long ie by the time it got too hot it would shut down thanks to low battery with original capacity , now it will get hotter than it ever would have

If it is a model that has a fan built in you can be more relaxed

If the load is tiny it may be able to dissipate the heat without help to be safe i would add a fan if adding big batteries

You can then deduce from the 20w that the charger is charging less than 1.56A
If it is busy charging


Which sounds about right if they say fast charging in 4 hrs

Ie you should only be using 3.5ah from a 7ah battery

And if this charges at 1.5a

You can do about 6ah in 4hr
So with losses should do what they promise
