I have a mate looking to sell his RCT 6000-6kva X 4 & RCT 10000 UPS 10kva x 9 units.
The RCT 10000 units are rack mount units.

All the units are just over 1 year old.
Question is what are they worth second hand?
Can you use the units to run your basic home appliances, lights fridge TV and router. NO stoves and kettles.

A UPS was designed that in the event of a power loss you have time to safely save your work and shut down your PC.
What you need is an inverter.

However, some of us have modded our UPS's to run appliances for hours, but this comes at a risk. Like the charging system overheating and blowing up when power is restored. A risk we take

A fridge requires a pure sine wave input, most inverters/ups are modified sine wave.

And im sure the inrush current the fridge pulls will pop that UPS, even if it didnt it would only last maybe 10-20 min.

These are server grade UPS's normally would be used in data centers to allow the servers to remain running until the generator kicks in and probably to smooth the signal so doubt they'd be modified.

My company bought UPS for all the employees working from home. So they bought APC online units + huge additional battery. Lasted barely a year. (if you haven't heard of APC they are THE company for server UPS, basically the bees knees, those units cost close to R100k with the extra battery)

Reason? They are UPS, not backup power like inverters. They aren't intended for extended outages like load shedding.
They are built for data centres with switch over between power sources.
I highly suspect the RCT units will have the same problem and thus I wouldn't recommend them to anyone for load shedding purposes.

These UPS typically prioritise quality of power over the quality of the battery and battery charger circuit. So they don't do a good job of recharging the battery quickly and the chargers are usually underpowered and low quality.

Now if the charger it uses is good quality like the inverters (20+ amps recharge and smart charger) then that is a different thing. But if it is like the APC charger (2-4 amps dumb charger), then hell no.

Funny thing is everyone crying on TA about battery life and non long running unit not long running and batteries not lasting.

They need to teach people in Matric the lifeskills they need in the real world
  1. How long does a UPS last during loadshedding
  2. How to fill in a IRP5 Tax Return
  3. How to successfully cancel your TV Licence
  4. How to repair a faulty vacuum cleaner

Ja imagine spending 5k on a 2000va or more on a 3000va just to realize upses are not long running solutions unless otherwise specified or specifically built for it with support for ext batteries. Why not get a trolley or diy trolley like solution if that is your aim expandable with solar...

Yeah see that often, it's like it's a UPS, it's meant to keep the unit running long enough to shutdown or for generators to kick in, not to last the whole of loadshedding, I mean I know my old RCT 650 will only give me just under 2 hours of power for my camera system in the garage, cause I know the limitations, and if gets less and less oh well. I just don't need the UPS anymore with inverters scattered around.

Yup those chargers are miniscule and will only really trickle charge the battery for ages, I think it can take up to 12 hours or more to charge the 7ah in the UPS.
