RDP - Unshaped or Shaped line

Hi guys, first post so here goes...

We are using terminal server for our remote sites. DSL lines at the site is 4mb and DSL incomming to Head Office is 4mb. TS is very slow at the remote sites and found out that we are using Shaped DSL via our serice provider [by the way not Telkom..]. Considering that the main focus is on the Support Sites and not any specific Internet application, should we be using an Unshaped line?

Does anyone know what the order of importance is for protocols on Shaped DSL?

Hey,

Unshaped only means that all protocols carry the same level of prioritization.

This means that http,ftp,pop,p2p etc. all have the same amount of throughput.

RDP/Terminal uses http(s) which does not get shaped on a shaped account, it takes priority over the other protocols, so you would not be getting a speed increase in my opinion.

I'd suggest buying 1GB prepaid from www.webafrica.co.za (like I say, shaped is fine) and test whether it is your ISP that is experiencing issues.

One thing to remember is that any and all other activity on the ADSL lines, from downloading to uploading will effect the line speed.

Shaped vs Non Shaped for Local Internet DSL for RDP really is 99% the same. I've tried both and couldnt see the difference at all between a shaped DSL and unshaped DSL account when accessing local (within SA) rdp connections.

I have to disagree with you teraside. On the router I have blocked http traffic but can still connect via rdp, but possibly I am not understanding you correctly. Our ISP is Datapro and our DSL line is 4MB via telkom.

Am I correct in saying that the there may be a speed problem, depending on the distance from the exchange as DSL's limit is 7kms?

It all depends on what your ADSL is synchronizing at. You can check this in your router in the ADSL statistics area. It should say something like 4096 down 512 up which is 4mb sync down and 512kb sync up.

If your lines are syncing lower than this it could be due to your distance from the exchange.

I'll retract what I said to about RDP working over HTTP, since they are both protocols on their own in actual fact.

Just as shaped, you can buy a prepaid unshaped GB from an ISP like WebAfrica and test whether it improves things.

Is that some kind of hidden feature?
By default, RDP uses tcp port 3389 which isn't HTTPS's default port - 443. As far as i know, RDP/TCP port 3389 is shaped...
