Hi there all,

Basically, I'm a cod4 player. However, playing on a celeron with 512Mb RAM.

I'm trying to squeeze as much juice as possible out of my system. Unfortunately Cod4 Multiplayer does not run on linux (PB not supported).

Can anyone please reccomend a version of Windows XP which has been trimmed down to the bare necessities - so that I can try and get maximum gaming performance with my *** pc - (In terms of background processes etc.) as all I use this pc for is games and the occassional forum browsing.

I have tried to use nLite but I failed miserably (Wasn't sure about all the different processes. I have heard that Black XP and Tiny XP are quite good? Please can you also tell me where I can download these
"different versions" of windows from.

Thanks.

i.e can u pm me a link :D :D.

My version of win xp is full of bugs and glitches, very frustrating.

Also, I found that when I format my pc runs like a complete bomb for a few weeks! But as time goes on it seems to me like other stuff creeps in and I really start struggling with performance (Lag spikes etc)

Any suggestions as to how I can control this? Should I create a completely seperate account just for gaming?

Thanks,
Stfury

In terms of not-so-legal versions, I think XP Black edition is very stream-lined...but many don't trust it because it is said to be full of spyware.

I'd suggest reading up on tweaking windows services. Specifically BlackViper's services guide. And remove all the non-essential from you startup locations.

Check under your graphics card's options/control panel. Setting everything to performance usually makes a large difference.

why not add more memory man

no version of xp is going run well with 512 ram man

get another 512 and then xp should run fine

Tiny XP yes, Black XP no.

I have tested Tiny XP on older systems and it runs well.

The point of Black XP is to deck out your system with eye Candy, so I would not go for that.

If you can find a copy of Tiny XP you might want to test that.

Tiny XP Beast edition. So long as you have a gin-u-wine copy of Windows, you shouldnt give a toss either way. That one works like a bomb, ran smooth as silk (smoother actually) on a PIII 500Mhz with 256Megs ram. That computer however wa snot used for gaming.

PS: Tiny XP Beast Edition was specifically made for gaming, so it includes all needed stuff for hooking up to the intertubes :)
