Well, thought I'd put Quake4 in the shopping trolley and head home to whip some alien butt, got home, installed it, surround sound wouldn't work, got on the net to look for a patch, found it (117MB), started with download at a healthy pace of 80kbps and THEN, SUDDENLY, the speed dropped to 20kbps - ARRRRGGGGGGHHHH!!!!! - I realised I've reached the cap on my 1GB package!!

Phoned heldesk (call was answered in 5.23 sec and very helpful) and asked for my package to be upgraded from 1GB to 3GB - immdediately!

I'm happy again.

Your package was upgraded immediately?

I will suggest you check again, maybe they made you buy 2 extra gigs:D

lol. I believ eit is quite possible. It is simply a software update to your account and im shure they advertise it as instant.

that is what telkom were supposed to do with my prepaid line so that I could get ADSL. they also did it while i was on the phone with them. Difference is that it was never actualy changed. Had to phone again twice until I got a coloured guy who swore about the black chick who tried to do mine first and he got it done immediatley. I dont like being racist, but that was my experience.

Glad to hear Iburst got it right for you.

Well, um, I guess it was a manner of speaking when I said 'immediately', but, hey, I'll let you know tomorrow if it's clocking 100kbps, or still 10kbps....

If it is 100kbps, I'll take my hat off to them!

So will I..

but Quake 4 will probably be a bit dissapointing, it was to me. But still good fun and GREAT graphics. However it is very similar to doom, you would thnk you were back on Mars at some parts of the game.

Is itjust me or in general does iBurst seem to be improving on their customer service?

They have to. There are so many offerings to choose from now (Vodacom, MTN, Cellc, Sentech, Telkom) and all the companies are fighting for market-share.

'The consumer is king' (with Telkom's monopoly in the broadband market declining day by day - hooray!!).

if there is so much choice, why are prices still so high. usually even just 3 large companies fighting for market share is enough to force a price war. where is the strangle hold on this market? is it the infrastructure connecting SA to the global network? how many options are there for that piece of the puzzle?

nl101, if you have done any micro-economics, this is a typical example of collusion, where it is in each companies best interests to keep things the way they are (prices sky high). Unfortunatly, I am very skeptical of anybody starting a price war with Telkom, and until someone does, prices are going to remain high. At the end of the day, if everybody were to drop prices, then Telkom would drop prices, everybody would remain with the same market share, and have lower profits (Ok this isn't entirely true, as the market would increase in general, due to lower prices, but the general market share would remain the same. The other thing is that even though their revenue would increase, due to higher number of clients, their costs would also go up, and there would be more strain on the netwoks). This is the main reason behind not starting a price war with Telkom...

Nicely explained. But you could've just said that there isn't enough competitors. Face it, there isn't. You need at least 10-12 independant providers to START making it competitive. Thinking of 3 providers is a joke. You'll just get ----- in the --- 3 times over.

True.. to an extent. There are alot of smaller providers too, and GOAL BPL is coming very soon as well. And Im shure another few big wireless company will come with WiMAX. Oh and IS should be counted speratley. They provide a different service from a seperate connection (internatinal bandwidth wise)

Anyway, the point is that Telkom aare still the ones holding us back. nl101: It is Telkom who control the international access, and they charge HUGE prices for it. So that is what keeps the prices so high, mainly.
Also, if everyone could have landing spots for broadband cables, like SAT-3 and the new EASSY cable coming through. then alot more companies would probably be interested in making ISP's and alternate providers.

Oh, and one more.. the SNO will also be on the broadband scene too, so thats about 6-8 providers very soon.

Prices are also high because of Telkom interconenct fees for their diginet lines and transfering bandwidth around SA. This is needed by other internet providers.

get rid of telkom first, then we should see some serious competition and better packages, not to mention better service.

And 2 months ago I made a big fuss 'cause they (3 separate people at iBurst on 3 instances) told me it can only be done at month end and I had to give at least 7 days' notice beforehand...
