Some of this is already happening. Institutions just conveniantly neglect to inform you where they get their info from...
 
I get regular calls, Dear sir, (friendly voice) we just want to update our data base and check if the details is still correct? , Me, who are You, Company so and so XXX, sorry not dealing with you and not interested , put down phone.

ID theft and data base reselling is a huge deal nowadays, there should be a law to report these scams as now you never know what is legit. I even tell "cops" if they call to visit and bring their ID.

I had to reprimand my girl as this happened on my home line and she nearly oblidged, just noticed by her way of speaking in time and told her to ring of, The phone rang again and I answered, they asked for my girl by name and I asked what they want, They are Barlows same story, so I said sorry I have no dealings with Barlows, but sir wont you use us in future, by now I was pissed off, No, I wont and stop wasting my F#@$@ time, Bye. Slapped down phone and called famiilly together ad made rule no info handed to no one.
 
Its nothing short of spyware and spam. Watch out for that same flood of nonsense to hit the phone/voip networks once computers get smart enough to do some non-suspicious voice interaction.

Ways around it?

Dont publish your phone number. Hah, hardly a solution. Pre-emptive: only allow calls from certain numbers/suburbs... Reactionary: block spammers. Or just fine them to hell.

And if you dont publish your contact details, gow will people reach you? Hmmm.... advertising? Shops? Through your bank? The future is going to be a cool, fuzzy and wierd place.... or could be. :rolleyes:
