Hi guys/girls/other politically incorrect terms,

I have a really weird windows 7 problem. I have a Hauwei E270 HSUPA modem. Running Windows 7 Ent. Whenever I connect to the internet I can browse for a while/play online games etc, but at a random time my laptop (HP 8710w) freezes. Absolutely dead, num lock doesn't work etc. Have to power off and then back on again.

Now I've reinstalled the modem, updated all Windows 7 updates etc, even taken my laptop apart and dusted the dust mites away. Still have the same problem. It only started happening recently (say the last month).

I have 2 partitions on my laptop, so I installed a fresh copy (dual boot) and it's working perfectly on the fresh install. But I want to fix my current install :(

Any suggestions?

Well, the only errors I'm seeing in the last 7 days are:

Event ID: 7000

The Diagnostic Service Host service failed to start due to the following error:
A privilege that the service requires to function properly does not exist in the service account configuration. You may use the Services Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in (services.msc) and the Local Security Settings MMC snap-in (secpol.msc) to view the service configuration and the account configuration.

I also get the following warning now and again:

Event ID: 37
The speed of processor 0 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 0 seconds since the last report.

...

Mmm, does not look like the cause. I'm guess what ever is causing this kills the system so quickly it has not time to complain about in the event log...

Perhaps a busted sys or dll file somewhere ?

This may sound crazy and the internet is full of complaints about this freezing/locking up after a few weeks of installation.
99% is your dual boot - get rid of the second OS partition, especially if its WinXp and all your problems will go away.
I had this problem and only when I dumped my Xp Drive did everything work ok.
Some people don't seem to have this problem for some reason or another.
Anyway once you get to know Win7 properly and do all the necessary hacks, you'll never need to use Xp again.
