Hi,
Hoping someone can help.
I have a friend who's laptop hard drive went on the brink. I took a look at it for him. It won't pick up the hard drive in the bios, nor will it see the drive in my external USB sata reader. It does spin up though.

The drive is a Toshiba 640gb.

He needs the data back. There are important documents etc that need to be recovered. It's an expensive lesson, and I'll be sure to show him how to use Google drive once else everything is restored.

Can anyone recommend a reliable and reasonably priced data recovery company (can be anywhere in the country, I will just courier the drive down in plenty bubble wrap)?

Thanks in advance!

Why not try and get the data back yourself using software? (if the drive is spinning)

If the drive spins rather DIY...i use Stellar phoenix data recovery software works like a boss:whistle:

Will Stellar Phoenix work even though my external enclosure does not see the drive at all in Windows. It does not detect new hardware when plugged in and Computer Manager does not see the drive at all in the drives list. Would Stellar Phoenix still be able to access the drive?

I'm pretty sure that the drive would at least need to be picked up by the BIOS for any DIY tools to have a chance of working.

Cost me that for a 2Gb Flash
Luckily most of the sites have quote forms so you can get an idea what your going to pay.

Yeah, when I say R2k+ that is the starting price if it's not a simple software recovery, could easily be R6k. The only way to know would be to send it in.

Not in all cases. There are cases where you can still run recovery software on a drive even if it doesn't pick up in your BIOS.

First try the DYI approach

We are one of the few data recovery companies who have fixed pricing publicly available, no surprises.

If the drive is not even detected in the BIOS you're not going to have any luck. Even if it is detected, if you try and run recovery software on a drive that has a hardware problem you're not going to get a great result, if any. And, the problem will become worse, very important.

And it's a Toshiba, knowing the nature of Toshiba faults you're going to need a professional recovery. If the data is worth the cost of professional recovery then have it done, if not then you can either try to DIY (with all the risks) or replace the drive and move on.
