I have to reboot my router every 24 hours. Currently I do this by physically switching it on and off (less effort than using the built in utility web interface).

Is this right or have I missed some vital setting?

If so does anyone have a way of making this happen automatically?

I looked at a program by "Bioinformatics" but although it does reboot the router it must remain running as a forground app. This program goes further in that it creates redirect via an outside web page which is not something I require.

One of my customers has the same problem - where did u get this util Bioinformatics from?

Apparently according to a programmer friend of mine this util should be easy to write - telnet in - send the reset codes and walla! The problem he says is that it will have to check for line access by pinging every so often so the util will have to remain resident as a service.

Any one out there done this?

Cheers

Got program from TUCOWS.

Main problem with it is that it is not a SERVICE.

Anyone care to write us a SERVICE to do this?

You have a couple of options depending what you have in operating system, hardware connection, etc.

If you have XP - it has a built in PPPoE client and you can set it to redial the connection to TelKum!!

If not, you can invest in a BISD (Broadband Internet Sharing Device) - the AIP104 from Alpha is a good product - it has a WAN port, 4 LAN ports, Print server, DyDNS connection built in and it's own PPPoE client. It will automatically dial up on a 24 or 12 hour basis - defined by TelKum!! automatically. - You are also able to turn your PC off at this point, and it will carry on the connection for you. It also has NAT translation for extra security from the web - IE it has it's own internal IP address and it receives it's external Ip from either TelKum!! or DyDNS - as setup by the user. - It has more features that you mi8ght not use - but may be usefull if you expand or require a server to be connected to the net,.. (PS you can get this unit from Rectron at R 1090.00 excl VAT - dealer price - call me if you need one - it's also good for mini LAN's[8D])

The third option is to just be stuck with the SH** from TelKum!! as required by sheep and idiots....

Let me know if you guys need any help in setup etc...

Subject: Telkom ADSL Router Utility: Daily Restart, Dynamic to Static IP Address Convertor, ADSL Usage Stats

Hi,

ADSL was recently launched in South Africa and we've been using it since January. Our ISP is Telkom and in their wisdom they decided that ADSL IP addresses needs to be reset every 24 hours meaning that you can't run a web server on it.

We've written a utility to solve that. From the Read Me file:

A. BEFORE YOU START

This utility works with the Telkom ADSL Router. It's labelled "ADSL Router Pots" and is a flat beige hub-sized unit. It's manufactured by Marconi. This utility has not been designed for the Alcatel ADSL modem or any other third party ADSL modems.

B. INTRODUCTION

Though the ADSL router can automatically dial up to the internet, Telkom resets the IP address every 24 hours. This requires one to manually restart the router or to connect to it via a web browser, log in and restart it.

This utility will automatically restart the router every 24 hours at the specified time.

The routers external IP address is determined and uploaded to a specified web site. Using the supplied Update.asp and Redirect.asp combined with a free ASP (Active Server Page) host such as 7Host.com your ADSL line effectively is changed from a dynamic IP address to a static IP address. Try the sample: http://free.7host01.com/adslrouter/Redirect.asp

For a short URL use tinyurl.com. Use http://tinyurl.com/dp5c for http://free.7host01.com/adslrouter/Redirect.asp

Your ADSL usage is retrieved from the Telkom ADSL Usage web site http://adsl.telkomsa.net.

C. INSTALLATION

Run the setupkit, Biometrics.co.za Telkom ADSL Router Restart.EXE, and select all the default prompts. After installation run the utility from the Start/Programs/Biometrics.co.za Telkom ADSL Router Restart menu. Enter your ADSL routers IP address, administrator user name and password. For ADSL usage data you also need to enter your Telkom ADSL user name and password.

Click the Update button and the utility will download and upload.

An Update happens every 10 minutes.

We are releasing it as shareware. Feel free to add it as a free utility on your web site. Our FTP server is ftp://ftp.biometrics.co.za and the file name is "Biometrics.co.za_Telkom_ADSL_Router_Restart.EXE". It's 3.60 MB.

Let us know what you think ...

Regards

A few things to add to the utility:

1. Optional NT service
2. Ping to see if a reset is required

If you are using the Telkoms ADSL Router (the one with POTS on it) you should ask Telkom to upgrade the Router firmware. Once Upgraded it reconects automatically when the IP changes. You must run the router as a router though and dump Telkomsa PPoE client. My router has been up and running for weeks and only falls over rarely.

<br />Help! Please<br />
Any chance of someone documenting how you set up the Router POTS as a router rather than using the PPPoE Client.

Ask telkom to upgrade your firmware or post/send me your email addr and I can mail the firmware to you. I recomend you ask telkom though.

Can someone point me in the direction of this firmware update too?

My ADSL Pots router hangs once every 24 hours. I've setup some linux scripts to reboot it but I'd prefer if I didn't have to...
