Why is it that my ADSL often drops down to ~2mbps overnight or when I come home after a day's work, but then after a reboot of the modem it goes back up to >4mbps?

I'm on 10mpbs but my max sync rate is around 7mbps.
This morning's speed tests ..

11:40 - Down: 2.26 Mb/s Up: 0.74 Mb/s Ping:11 ms
After reboot
11:42 - Down: 4.67 Mb/s Up: 0.58 Mb/s Ping:13 ms

I know it resyncs with Telkom etc. but shouldn't all this negotiation happen automatically in the background? Thing is I'm rebooting my modem about once or twice a week because of this, is this normal or is it just me?

Could it be equipment? I use a cheap & nasty D-Link 2500u due to frequent lightning .. at R200 a pop it's cheaper to replace than my TP-Link wireless router :o

ps. It seems to mostly happen when I don't use the modem, i.e. if I say download overnight it keeps the higher sync rate.

I'm facing the same problem - a problem which Telkom has been unable to resolve <sigh>

You will also find that your signal-to-noise ratio is dropping well below 6 <double sigh>

Any suggestions welcome !

The S/N ratio does - on occasion - improve, with the result that the speed improves.

Unfortunately these occasions are very rare :(

Around 1am this morning I spent time rebooting the modem (several times), only to watch it go from a download speed of 850 bytes to 100 bytes over a five minute period ...

BTW my 10Mb line was working 100%; that is, until Telkom decided to upgrade the line speeds.

Anyone else start experiencing line / speed problems after Telkom started on their upgrades ?

ive got the same router, been jumping around lately with all different thru puts but speed has stayed stable at 10mb/s according to my router & my snr is stable at 11.3 down & 11.2 up, now im barely able to get 50kb/s with anything, i guess its just trial & error.

ive also noticed that speeds get better only after 12am these days where as it used to be like clock work at 7 or 8pm.

If thats the case have you attempted to run traceroutes during the problem time?

I haven't tried a trace route: to be honest I didn't consider it.

The following is an example of my problem:

  • On Saturday (actually Sunday) - time shortly after 1 am - I connected to the WebAfrica news server and started a download.
  • The download started at 850 characters / second, then over the next five / eight minutes dropped to less than 200 char/sec.
  • I rebooted the modem - same story.
The above was repeated several times. I eventually gave up around 1H45 and went to bed :)

That bothers me. Rather ask them to drop it down to 6Meg so it's stable.

Last night - when my S/N was around 5.5 - I called 10210 and asked them to reset the port.

After the port reset the S/N jumped to 14.4.

All suggestions welcome <sigh>

There is a feature that many modems support, called SRA (Seamless Rate Adaption), which would probably prevent this problem by dynamically adjusting the rate on the fly according to SNR levels - preventing the need for a reboot. Unfortunately, this feature must be enabled at the DSLAM, which it rarely ever is. I've tried asking Telkom to enable this feature on my port (TelkomZA on this forum, mind you) but I guess that's kinda like asking a newborn child to read a play by Shakespear as this hasn't been done yet for me. Don't even bother asking the callcenter to do this, they'll have no idea

:wtf: That Port Reset is a mysterious and wonderful thing.

Yeah, if you only end up syncing around 4 Mbps then why not just drop to a 4 Mbps line?

Interesting: my old Courier 56K modem included the ability to constantly renegotiate link speeds and so I automatically presumed that it was part of ADSL.

Seems each time we go forward it includes a degree of going backwards :(

'Cos I'm not unhappy with the speed i'm getting, ~500-600kpbs downloads most of the time, its just that sometimes the line feels like sludge until I reboot the modem.

Ahh. I was also thinking about the stability but also the fact that you're paying for a 10 Mbps line.
If you sync at 6 Mbps you'll still get those speeds but your line will be more stable (in theory).

most of the time, if you have to keep rebooting the router to get proper speeds, its the router.

I would test with another router first.

if the problem persists, it the line, port or card. in other words, telkom

I'll risk getting another modem to test, but after a 2 year struggle with Telkom I'm not risking my current stable internet even if I have to reboot my modem daily :-/

Stable internet ...that needs a daily reboot :D
