Reborn Renault 4: electric 4x4 previewed ahead of unveiling

French brand’s revival of historic model will be shown at the Paris motor show before a 2025 release

The famed Renault 4 will be revived in 2025 as a retro-inspired electric 4x4, due to be revealed at the Paris motor show later this month.

The car shown in Paris will be a high-riding off-roader inspired by the 4L Trophy, a Dakar-style rally across the Moroccan desert, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

An official preview image reveals that it will wear a familiar front fascia to the original 4, albeit modernised with LED lighting.

The roofbox and large wheel travel present in the official image comprise the nod to the 4L Trophy but aren't expected to feature on the production car.

It will be likened to the 1960s classic car in name and styling only, sitting above the 2024-bound Renault 5, which has already been revealed as a £18,000-£21,000 concept. Therefore the R4 is likely to command a premium price, rather than being sold as a budget-friendly car as was its forebear.

As with the 5, it will be underpinned by the Renault–Nissan CMF-BEV small car platform, benefitting from new battery and motor technology currently in development.

The electric reimagining of the 4, along with the 5, is part of Renault’s plan to make up to 90% of its European sales fully electric by 2030. It will launch four electric cars by 2025, with a further two EVs expected to be announced over the next year.

Renault 4 to be reincarnated as modern electric SUV

The Renault 5 isn’t the only historic nameplate that’s making a comeback in the French carmaker’s line-up.

At the Paris Motor Show later this month, the company will present a new concept car that’s inspired by the Renault 4, and it is strongly rumoured that the design study will spawn a production model.

“30 years after production ended, Renault will seize the moment at the 2022 Paris Motor Show to unveil its new take on the internationally renowned and recognised Renault 4,” the carmaker said.

“The team of designers working under Gilles Vidal, Renault Design Vice President, has given a modern twist to an iconic model that left its mark on the 1960s, ‘70s, and ‘80s.”

Renault is reviving the Renault 4 as a crossover EV concept

Renault officially teased the successor of one of its most popular models ever - the Renault 4 or also known as 4L by some. The car was a small hatchback produced in the 1960s until the company discontinued production in the mid-1990s. Now, Renault is making a successor with a modern twist.

Since crossovers and EVs are all the craze lately, the French automaker cashing in on the Renault 4 popularity to introduce a small SUV. The teaser images aren't very revealing, but you can easily tell that it has high clearance and carries an outdoorsy vibe with that roof cargo. Some LEDs here and there highlight elements such as the roof box and the side steps.

Renault 4Ever Trophy Concept

The Renault 4 is much more than a car: it is a true icon. With over 8 million units sold in more than 100 countries, it has been crossing generational and social gaps for the past 60 years. It is as comfortable in cities as far out in the countryside, and multipurpose - you can drive it to work and on long journeys, use it to carry loads, and a lot more.

It is unpretentious yet in, chic yet a car for everyone, and appeals to men and women alike.

Production was discontinued 30 years ago but the 4L has never left the limelight. It is one of the original young-timer vintage cars and the past 25 years have seen the 4L Trophy prove time and again its worth as a versatile car built to last. This explains why it is still a crowd pleaser, especially with the younger generations.

The 4EVER Trophy show car that Renault has unveiled at the 2022 Paris Motor Show is its second iconic model to get an electric reboot, following Renault 5 Prototype, during the Renaulution. Renault, in other words, is tapping into its illustrious past to better electrify its future.

Renault 4 crossover is a retro rebirth for 1960s hatchback

French EV mixes new-era tech with a nod to the past and will launch in 2025

The reborn Renault 4 is a retro-styled electric crossover primed to become the French brand's best-selling EV when it launches in 2025.

Twinned with the lower-slung and similarly nostalgic 2024 Renault 5 supermini, it will be the second car to use Renault's compact CMF-BEV architecture and will be built alongside the 5 at Renault's new ElectriCity production hub in northern France.

The 4 has appeared for the first time in concept form at the Paris motor show, wearing an outlandish off-road-themed bodykit in reference to the modified Renault 4s that take part in the yearly 4L Trophy rally across the Moroccan desert.

The Renault 4 has returned as an off-roader concept

This is the Renault 4EVER Trophy, and it’s here to preview a future, fully electric b-segment SUV

Soon after it revives the Renault 5 as a production electric supermini next year, Renault will also launch a new 4 in 2025. Here's a preview. A pretty outlandish preview, but you can still draw clues.

The Renault 4EVer will be an electric mini crossover. But, we can assume, one that comes without the concept's sand ladders, shovel and adventure rack. They'd be very much surplus to requirements in Surbiton and Cheadle.

Still, the 4EVer Trophy concept is a bit of fun, and at Renault's home Paris show, a bit of fun is just the job. Even the name – 4EVer… 4 EV… see what they did there?

Renault's chief of advanced and concept design Sandeep Bhambra says the concept's pained metal, and the glazing, are "very close" to the production car's. "The design of the production car is almost frozen now." How does he know? Because the advanced and production teams share studios. "This is a teaser."

Renault 4 Rebooted: 4Ever Trophy concept points to future compact SUV

With more than eight million units sold between 1961 and 1994, the Renault 4 is one of the most successful French cars of all time.

And now, exactly 61 years after the original made its debut at the Paris Motor Show, its modern successor has taken shape – in the form of the 4Ever Trophy design study.

Although it is technically a concept, Renault says the vehicle paves the way for a future B-segment SUV, which will be exclusively battery powered, as is the case with the reincarnated Renault 5, which you can read more about here.

“The Renault 4Ever Trophy show car creates new memories while bringing back old ones,” Renault said. “Under a muscular exterior, the stylistic ties to its 4L predecessor are evident.”

Renault 4EVER Trophy is an EV ready for serious off-road adventures

Renault 4 reincarnation is a serious off-road electric car that is designed to race across the desert in the annual 4L Trophy humanitarian rally that takes place in Morocco. The rally was founded 25 years ago and there is only one requirement - participants need to drive a Renault 4.

As such, the Renault 4EVER Trophy is just a prototype, the production car won’t be coming with any of the off-road gear - but according to the company, what we see in silver paint, is the actual production-ready Renault 4. The car will be a compact crossover, it will be of course all-electric and we should see it in the showrooms some time in 2024.

The 4EVER Trophy is a brute of a car, with its huge off-road wheels and tires, spare wheel on the roof, sturdy bumpers and side protections with solid hook-up points - this is not a city car. The ground clearance looks to be enough to get the car over any terrain and across rivers.

New Renault 4 "just weeks away" from production sign-off

French EV mixes new-era tech with a nod to the past and will launch in 2025

The final design of the new Renault 4 is weeks aways from being signed off, following the reveal of the outlandish 4ever Trophy concept on which it will be based.

Renault design boss Gilles Vidal said the final touches are now being completed, but the overall shape is already agreed. The upper half of the concept, excusing the more out-there elements such as the spare wheel roof rack and bonnet grab handles, will be closely reflected in the production model when it arrives in 2025.

Meanwhile the lower half will see bigger changes, given that this concept was created in reference to the modified Renault 4s that take part in the yearly 4L Trophy rally across the Moroccan desert.

“The trick now is how to make a recognisable form and project it into the future. The front light signature and the taillights are recognisable elements by those who know the historic cars but the way we translate them is not retro in any way.”

The interior of the production 4 (or the lower-slung Renault 5 supermini) has not yet been revealed, but Vidal said: “The interior is very different to the rest of the range for sure. It’s the same approach as the outside: what do we activate that actually resonates with the historical detail, but of course without it being plastic-ky like it was then? And how do you project it into the future in terms of quality of execution, screens and so on?”

Here's your first look at the incoming new Renault 4

From the light-up grille and the sliding fabric roof to the retro box shape, the early signs are positive

Hurrah! Renault has released a new jigsaw puzzle! Joking. The first few exterior teaser shots of the all-new Renault 4 have landed, unveiling the smaller details of the funky mini SUV that’ll sit just above the 5… despite being a smaller number. Maybe less really is more?

Anyway, there’s a retractable fabric roof and a light-up grille among the notable traits. The rear plays host to split pill-shaped lights with sharp, straight roof and tailgate lines intersecting with a small rear wing.

Then there’s the trapezoidal quarter windows crafted above the rear arches and parallel lines along the body - direct references back to its predecessor. Just as the vinyl prints that stretch from the lower windscreen to the front wheel arches are, though pictures showcasing these haven’t been provided yet.

There’s a healthy spate of black accents dotted right across the body. We also can’t fail to mention the Y-spoked alloys either, since any small, playful French car needs to have a groovy set of those on. It’s tradition at this point.

Renault 4 E-Tech electric smiles in first official teaser images

The Renault 4 E-Tech electric will make its global debut at the Paris Motor Show on October 14. Ahead of that, the brand has today shared the first teaser images of the car. Well, not of the car in its entirety, of course - Renault wants to keep the overall look a secret until the official unveiling.

But we are given glimpses at various bits and pieces. The backlit Renault badge and the front grille, for example (above). Or a look at the lower parts of the doors on the left side (below).

We can see a taillight, the "4" badge, the side window behind the doors, and the angle at which the roof meets the tailgate, spoiler included.
