Hi All,

My brother has an oldish hyundai sedan and the base carpet in the car is kinda falling apart, especially in the back.

Now it's his birthday on Saturday and I either want to replace it myself (Yes i like working with my hands) or if it is really a mission I will send it in, so i am asking for advice on:

1.) If anyone has done this before - what's the procedure, strip out front seats, remove old carpet, clean steel with what, thinners? leave to dry, apply contact adhesive, stick new carpet?
Where to get this carpet from? how to get shaping of carpet right so it looks good?

2.) if you have had it done somewhere, where was it and how much?

Ps. I am in Boksburg Johannesburg so somewhere on the East Rand please.

try some material/fabric places
u can also try car audio places and see if theyll sell u or direct u to a place,
they usuall have those rolls of grey carpet that they use to cover their boxes

also try the dealers and see if they can supply the carpet
it will be precut and moulded so it will be easy to install
but the price might be ridiculous, worth a try tho

Thanks, I have looked at plenty videos for advice, what gets me is where do i get the carpet from and advice on how to get it into shape.

I only know of a place in PTA west that does it.

You should be able to buy the carpet from the dealership or a scrapyard. It's easy to put it in as it's already pre-molded. The problem is taking out all the bits ontop of the carpet :p I say find out what the price is at a dealership, then go shop around at Scrapyards.

No advice beyond searching the intertubes but ...awesome present! I really think this is a great idea :)

Thanks, I like to try make an effort in doing something for him rather than giving him cash or gift cards, cz he just wastes it :p

Got hold of them, not bad, R1000 fully fitted - if i don't come right doing it myself will take it there, will be cheaper to do it on my own and i like the work :)

will give the dealer a shout tomorrow morning, prob is it is an old accent so not too sure if they will still have it in stock. Scrapyard is not a bad idea though...as long as i can find one in decent condition.

best part is he has no idea as i know where his spares are and when he is out at varsity just take it quick, same thing i did 2 years back when i installed central locking for his bday.

Unless the person in the vehicle was bleeding like a slaughtered lamb I'm sure the carpet would be 100% fine if you find one at a scrapyard.

lol
madness
best to go check out a scrapyard

phoned a few in my area and they don't have any of those cars in the yard, thinking wither take it to the place in pta or diy with a nice black industrial type carpeting...

theres a few scrappys in pta too
they specialise in korean makes, maybe give them a call too

There is an auto upholstery place in Roslyn PTA (sorry can't remember the name) that sells universal car carpets. You buy the big piece, wet it thoroughly and put it in the car. While it is wet you can shape it to the floor of the car. Cut it to shape. When it dries it goes hard. Bags of sand work very good to shape the floor.

Here is a good guide too...
