Receiving email from my domain on BB

Hi all

I'm about to get myself a BB 9780 and I just wanted to know how I'd go about setting it up to receive email from my domain's email address (ie [email protected]).

Unless you're using a public email service under your own domain, I think you're going to need a BES to get email pushed to your phone..
Most big organizations have one so ask your local IT geek to help you out.

I'm assuming BES is Business Enterprise Service? Will I not be able to get that through one of the service providers (mtn vodacom cell c)?

If your email is for your company like [email protected] and on an internal mail server you will need firstly BES on your line and secondly the server itself needs to have BES loaded.
If its a personal domain hostind with a normal hosting provider like webafrica or hostin unlimited or even gmail then BIS is what you need and your provider will give you access to the setup eitehr via your phone or via your pc only once BIS has been activated on your line.

So basically with BIS any email other than corperate with an internal server you use BIS, private corperate servers like at companies like old mutual you will need BES and your companies mail server will need to purchase the BES Server software from RIM in order for you to access your corperate mails.

Just a correction/addition

BIS can access the following email server types
Protocols:Imap,Pop3
Providers:Gmail,Googleapps,Yahoo,MSN/Hotmail

So any mail service you have running Imap or Pop3 protocol or the mentioned services will be accessible without using BES

I didn't feel like setting up BES on our exchange so I opened up IMAP and it's sailing,BES functionality adds the ability to access your Mail folders and calendars which frankly I don't care about

I moved my mail over a while ago on my private domain, your sites stil hosted where ever it is, you just update a record on your servers settings allowing google to manage you mail instead of your current host.
It allows you to avoid such common errors such as BIS not being able to access your mail server when seacom goes down on its weekly "piss off SA" mission.
Also will give youa lot more control and features, the best of all being true push mail as google is a push server itself.

With BIs on a normal IMAPI mail server it checks every 20 minutes and then collects and pushes the mail to your phone, via google the second a mail reaches googles servers it is pushed to the rim server and down to your handset so instead of up to 20 minute wait for email it will be closer to 5 seconds.

Unless the server supports IMAP idle..in which case the delivery is near instant

Why not setup a dummy 'work' gmail account that just replicates the mails from your normal email box?
You can then use BIS to get the emails from gmail. Also, you can tell google to use your work SMTP server so replying from your phone will use your work email address.
You may even be able to do some IMAP magic to keep the read/unread mails in sync between your mailbox and gmail.

Only problem with that is IMAP or POP, gmail only checks on an hourly basis, thats even worse than BIS itself.
