satelite on their house .... A 700mb avi file downloads in 40secs and Pings to london are +/- 35ms. ... STALEMATE!
More like STALE POO.

It takes an IP response a bit longer to travel 140,000 Km (SA->GEO->London->GEO->SA). Also 140 Mbps throughput smells like poo too.

Pings on satellite are usually in the 800ms range.
Generally the max you can go on a satellite channel is 60 Mbit/s, anything higher than that and you start needing specialised equipment.

To download a 700Mb file in 40 seconds you would need a internet connection running at 140Mbit assuming no overheads and a really really large receive buffer due to the latency.

Next time you measure your stats daysleeper, try not to use "Microsoft Minutes".

If this were true, then why did the cell phone tariffs not come down after the introduction of competition?

another thing is that some private individuals have a stake in SAT3/SAFE and business is business!

me could do with a couple more of these cables!

The bottom line is that if telkom drop the R449 part of the ADSL then ICASA, MyADSL and the people win. This will leave a most bitter taste in my mouse because I have spent thousands in the past years, that should not have been there according to the regulator.

Its already a case of too little to late!

The mobile market is still restricted... If entry to the market is restricted, the current players form "cartels" to protect income...

Over satellite? Apparently the laws of physics changed drastically while I was sleeping. Light can only travel about 10,500km in 35ms. Distance from London to Joburg is about 9059km. So that means the absolute minimum RTT of a ping to London would be about 70ms if you had a direct fibre line to London.

cartels are not just in the cellphone industry, they are all over in the country, the motor industry for one... all over the world prices are going down on new cars but in south africa two competing motor dealers will keep the same old prices, exactly the same...

GO GO GO South Africa!!! FTW
