Afternoon
I have searched but can only find references to people suggesting that the firewall or router be secure. Has anyone got a good recommendation to secure this router.

Are you sure it isn't a D-Link DSL-2640U?

Ensure that the Firewall is enabled for the PPPoE WAN interface.

The following setup is an overkill IMO:
You could then set the IP Filtering - Incoming & Outgoing's default policies to BLOCK.
Then add all the ports that you want to allow, like ports UDP 53 (DNS), TCP 80 (HTTP), TCP 443 (HTTPS). On the Outgoing filter, use destination ports & for the Incoming filter, use source ports.
Note: if you block all incoming traffic, you won't even be ableto visit a website, unless you add the firewall rules for HTTP(S).

For routers & servers that supports IP tables/advanced Firewalls, you could use the setup as explained here: http://www.physics.umd.edu/pnce/user-docs/Linux/firewall.html
