Recommend a Jeweller

Morning guys,

So I've decided 2022 is the year I take the plunge but need to start looking at ring pricing first.

I have a design already in mind, which I got off of glamira.co.za but I'm a bit hesitant with buying something like this online and especially on a site I can not find any reviews on so I would like to send the image off to a jeweller to replicate.

Can anyone recommend a bespoke jeweller, that is well priced in the Cape Town area.

So you want a bespoke jeweler to forego their actual design work and act simply as a technician to rip off something you saw on a mass produced jewellery website?

Bruh.

You must be mistaking me. I'm not insinuating direct copy and they can design it however they please but the image will help them understand what I want as a base idea, which was mine from the start... the mass producer just happened to have something that matched that idea.

Ah ok. Prins & Prins are spectacular. Are you taking your partner along? Their service is just second to none and it would probably be a really fun experience for both of you.
 
I used Ida Elsje but she may be a little avant-garde, depending on your tastes.

I see my wife's engagement ring features on that page. It was a very consultative process.

Otherwise, I would agree with the recommendation of Prins and Prins - I did shop around somewhat before deciding.

Preferably not. I would like to keep it a surprise as much as possible. The important stuff I think I've already got out of her like ring size and the main stone.

The design coincides with one of her art pieces she makes for wedding couples so I think she would love it.

I'm gonna do some shopping around of course but ty for the recomendation

Obviously a personal/couple choice but I would urge anyone contemplating a surprise proposal to consider involving their partner as much as possible. For one, what you spend on a ring you'll want to know that they love it and in the end they would probably prefer a say in the design as opposed to a surprise (as romantic as what it sounds to you).

Most importantly though: this is the start to of your partnership proper. Start it as a unit. Forego the mainstream/romcom nonsense and get on the same page as one another so you can face the future shoulder to shoulder.

Decent advice nonetheless... makes perfect sense and maybe the better route to take. As you said, it's the start as a unit
 
I would recommend Nicolina Jewellery
She is a jeweller who still practices the craft with handmade skills and does a stellar job at it, she is an absolute pleasure to deal with, and goes above and beyond.
Give her a shout, she is based in JHB though

Bought my wife's ring from Prins&Prins - we designed it, consulted with them to fine tune the design and they made it. This was 16 years ago. I take it back every 6 months or so for a polish and to get a new valuation certificate (which is important for insurance purposes).

Great guys to deal with, finding parking is a biatch.
I can highly recommend them.

I disagree to an extent. I just got a general indication that she preferred "white" metals instead of "yellow" and likes her jewellery on the smaller side, so no thick, massive rings.
The rest of the details is what I chose, since it is from me to her. And I REALLY liked the surprise aspect of it. In fact, it was such a surprise that I later learned she considered leaving me because I wasn't making move and was wasting her time, as I would always just brush off her hints. :laugh:
The wedding ring was then designed to her specifications.

I did learn some things though. Palladium is cool, but you can't make alterations, whereas you can with platinum/gold. You can resize it though. Tension set diamonds are nice, but if she works with her hands a lot, or works out with her rings on, the ring can bend ever so slightly, and that is obviously more risky when the tension in the ring is holding the diamond in place.

Also, some (most?) manufacturers do a free annual cleaning/servicing. They might also have or institute a policy that if it's longer than 13 months since the last cleaning/servicing that you lose the warranty. Don't forget about it.

Edit: Don't be a sucker. Don't do the 3 x monthly salary thing. Don't even do the 1 x monthly salary thing, and definitely don't go into debt.

The time and place and setting etc. of the actual proposal can absolutely be a surprise. The fact that you want to get married should never be a surprise. You sold have no question as to wheether she would answer yes. None. That's my take anyway. Marriage isn't a silly novelty that you do for instagram, it's a serious contract between two people and should be planned with a degree of sober cynicism. Going in with hearts in your eyes is bad idea.

It is, but every situation is unique. I knew what the answer would be, well, as sure as anyone could be I guess.
The problem with knowing, but not knowing exactly when, is that every time will be a "could it be now?" moment that could possibly end up in disappointment.

But yeah, I did it in a very private setting, nothing public or for show.
