Greetings members. I've been asked by my OLD father to please get him a laptop with a max budget of R10k. This machine will only be used for YouTube, email, social media and some searching the web. It must be a Windows machine and I can't look at refurbished because this boomer does not handle technology well. I need something that's going to be reliable.
I saw this Dell on TAL which I thought would be fine for his needs.
Dell Latitude 5400 Laptop 14 Intel Core i5 8th Gen i5-8365U- 1000GB HDD 8GB 1920x1080 FHD Windows 10 Pro

Let's see what you got. Oh, I want to order online.

Thank you in advance

Why not get him a tablet, rather?

Don't get a 14".

Recommended this to an "old" family member: https://www.wootware.co.za/asus-m15...indows-11-home-transparent-silver-laptop.html

15.6" FHD OLED and battery life is really good. They got it for R10k on Black Friday.

7520u is based on Zen 2 and essentially the same performance as the 8th gen Intel OP was looking at.

Looks good. It has upgradable memory too, so later he can add more RAM if it's too slow.

Memory Upgrade | 32GB Maximum Capacity (1x Slot Unoccupied):

Also, if you go for this don't get the extended warranty through Wootware. It comes with a 10% off voucher in the box and you can extend the warranty through the MyAsus app that's pre-installed for +-R800 IIRC.

What is it with old people and laptops.
You can get this brand new MIni pc for 6k
i5 12500t (12th Gen, 6 core, 12 thread )
16GB DDR4
256GB NVMe SSD
Windows 11 Pro
2 x Display port
Intel® AX211 WIFI

Then add 2k for a Del 22" FHD IPS screen or another R300 for 24"
Then you have a much better pc than any laptop with a 14" screen and stupid trackpad.
If the screen breaks you just replace it not the whole thing.

And you have to sit at the table while using it instead of taking it to the couch, bed, patio, maybe even shock, go on a holiday with it.

Yes every "old" people I know want a laptop but they sit in one spot at a table with it. They all have tablets that they take with on holiday or the coach.

For you, old is probably 30 something. I know people in their 80s who use laptops on the couch or in bed. Still it's good to have that option especially as older folks may end up bed bound for extended periods.

Pity your dad won't take a refurbished laptop because I am loving my DELL 5580 i5 7th gen with 16GB RAM and a 256GB SSD with the 15.6" FHD screen, this thing is lightning fast with a fresh install of Windows 10, best part is I only paid R2970 for it plus R30 delivery, also comes with the original power supply. Bought it last month, plenty more are available on bobshop. Only crap thing is my battery only lasts 5 minutes but Im fine with that as it is always plugged into my inverter.
